There’s a small sofa and a desk chair, so both of us can sit at the same time. This is so special for Japanese hotel at the same price range. Bathroom is roomy and modern. The overall vibe of the hotel is modern and cozy. Short walk from Yamagata station and 7-11 down stairs is a plus.

The ryokan has family rooms as well as facilities for disabled guests. What a cool place! There were so many opportunities to taste the beer that was brewed locally on-site. From the drinks bar at check-in to the tasting room open all day to the all-you-can-drink plan at dinner, the hotel was really quite generous with their liquid offerings. Even non-drinkers are accommodated with plenty of alcohol-free options. We also liked that they had multiple private baths on site. The main onsen were also quite nice. The food was fantastic and the beef served at dinner was some of the best I've had.

Boasting natural hot spring baths, Hohoemino Kuyufu Tsuruya is located a 15-minute walk from JR Tendo Station, 50 km from Sendai. Free WiFi is available throughout the property, and free private parking is available on site. Beautiful property. The room was spacious! Even for Western standards. The private onsen was very nice. We did not try the public onsen. The staff were courteous and helpful. Although the staff had limited English proficiency, they all used a translation app to help with communication which was incredibly helpful.

Skiing and cycling can be enjoyed nearby, while a bicycle rental service and ski-to-door access are also available on site. I stayed in autumn, and the location was divine; surrounded by trees with yellow and orange leaves, I enjoyed my morning coffee by the fire with a view of the lake. All the staff were exceptionally friendly and hospitable - I was well looked after. I will definitely be back for another beautiful stay!

A free shuttle is available from JR Kaminoyama Onsen Train Station, which is a 5-minute drive away and must be reserved at time of booking. I booked this hotel without much expectation, mainly for the convenience of traveling to Ginzan Onsen. But once I checked in, I felt a bit regretful that I didn’t have more time to stay. The hotel is beautiful and clean, the staff are lovely, and they even upgraded my room. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious. The public onsen was beautiful, clean, and very inviting, and there was even a private onsen in the room. The hotel is beautifully decorated with plenty of photo spots throughout.

Set 24 km from Kamo Aquarium and 47 km from Shinjo Station, Shukubo Kanbayashi Katsukane is situated in Mount Haguro district of Tsuruoka. This guest house offers free private parking, luggage storage space and free WiFi. To stay in a traditional setting really made our visit to Dewa Sanzan area special. The dinner options where all the food is locally sourced and prepared- incredible experience.

Very friendly staff with surprisingly good English. The room was spacious and clean, and the food was delicious. Good location close to Mount Haguro which was well worth the trip.

The wooden structure of the property portrays a traditional Japanese-style accommodation. Free Wi-Fi is available at the lobby. One of the best ryokans we’ve stayed at in Japan. The location feels straight out of a Ghibli movie, with over 300 years of history and an amazing atmosphere. We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed some of the best Japanese food each day at the ryokan restaurant. Since both me and my partner have tattoos, we booked the private onsen every evening through reception. The real highlight was the staff. They went above and beyond to make our stay special, spoke good conversational English, and checked in daily to ensure everything was perfect. Highly recommended for an authentic, cozy ryokan experience!
