Set in Tortuguero and with Tortuguero Beach reachable within a few steps, Chinitas Eco Lodge offers a tour desk, non-smoking rooms, a garden, free WiFi and a terrace. Guests can enjoy garden views. Chinitas Eco-Lodge is in San Francisco, a quiet village north of Tortuguero. We booked the deluxe queen room: perfect for our family, basic but clean, with good AC, and surprisingly bug-free! Breakfast was tasty, with coffee/tea, fruit, and a hot platter, and there are several wonderful hammocks for relaxing by the river. However, the best part our stay were the people: 1) Ana, one of the owners, was so warm and helpful (and patient with my attempts at basic Spanish) and her staff were equally friendly; and 2) Owen the tour guide was FANTASTIC: he has such passion for conservation, has a a sharp eye for spotting wildlife, and was instrumental in getting us to the right spots for turtle nesting. Strongly recommend booking the morning Canal tour as well as the late night Turtle tour with Owen, and booking the lodge in general if you want a welcoming, authentic experience!

With pool views, Laguna Lodge Full Board is set in Tortuguero and has a restaurant, a tour desk, bar, garden, year-round outdoor pool and terrace. Absolutely amazing unique place. Fun sitting out on the veranda watching the wildlife (we saw Parrots, Racoons, Frogs toads, spiders). Good variety of food and incredible early morning safari and turtle watching tours.
Stayed in tortuguero for 2 nights, from the boat trip there it's special! So much wildlife to see and some wonderful experiences to be had! Avoid making bookings at La Pavona, get there and check out the competition! Restaurants and bars all great, sunset in El Patio with an iguana watching is fantastic. PURA VIDA!
Tortuguero is a beautiful and rustic place. It is definitely worth a visit. This was my second time. Two to three nights is plenty of time to do everything you would want to do here. The nature is what it's all about!!
Tortuguero is as out-of-the-way as it comes. That said, the hour-long trip by boat through the tropical rain forest is a total treat. The boatman even stopped for photos of the crocodiles. It's a cute little town, the people are welcoming and gracious, and it is a place where you can't help relaxing.
The area is just beautiful. The nature is unique. Some take aways: 1 ) use private tours to see turtles, 2) take the “periferica local transportation to commute from tortuguero town to San Francisco ($3), 3) eat at El Patio downtown, 4) take tour to the canals 5) bring good mosquito repellent, 5) bring light rain ciat and rubber boats, 6) bring dark clothing to see the turtles ( non black or dark colirs are allowed)
I really liked the town, which was tiny. We did eat there a couple of times and both times the food was great. I could happily have spent more time exploring the nature, and just chilling at our hotel.
We were not originally going to stop in Tortuguero during our short stay in CR, but are so glad we did! It's not easy to get there, but the journey was most definitely part of the fun! We took a private boat from La Pavona (which cost the same as the public boat but offered to take us all the way to our hotel instead of the main Tortuguero dock). On our first night, we booked a turtle nesting tour from 8-10 pm and watched a momma turtle lay her eggs on the beach. It was incredible. We chose to eat at our hotel across the water instead of in town. It was easier that way. Besides the turtle nesting tour, we also took a hike in the national park with our children. There are other tours we could have taken, but we were satisfied with just watching the wildlife (monkeys) play at our hotel pool. On our boat trip back to La Pavona was memorable -- in that we saw many crocodiles along the river.
