Quietly tucked away on Philae Island and accessible only by boat, the facility is family run and we really enjoyed the stay. Tamer Darwish is the host and fortunately speaks very good English as our Nubian/Arabic is less than adequate. Tamer was always available to assist by phone or text. The mother/daughter team that tends to the daily operations do not speak very much English but with the use of google translator, we managed to fill in the gaps. The room was clean and comfortable, the food was so very good and plentiful…I have no idea what most of it was, but it was delicious! Plan ahead to ensure the boat is available, and they can arrange cars or whatever you may need. We typically arranged the boat for an early morning departure and then returned for a fantastic meal in the quaint, pillow-laden open-air dining area as we reflected on the day and watched the Nile go by. As we were there during Ramadan just a few weeks ago, one evening as the entire family gathered to break fast, we were graciously invited to join. We enjoyed a great meal and wonderful conversation with a few that spoke English…it felt like we were part of the family. Kind, gentle & giving people, will always remain in our memory. If the absolute opposite of a Hyatt or Holiday Inn is your thing as it is ours, try it.

The rooms were simple but comfortable and the daily breakfast was great. The island is very quiet and peaceful, and walking around, you get a glimpse of Nubian village life. The boat ride to the island and around was so magical and peaceful, and it was lovely to get a feel for the Nile energy. The owner, Kareem, is such a friendly and helpful guy. He went out of his way to assist us with boat and taxi transport around the island and into Aswan and to see the temple of Philae. We joined Kareem on a trip to Aswan and ate lunch together, and had some great conversations.
