It’s a way out of town (check the map) we didn’t have a car but Miia kindly arranged pickup and drop off with a stop at the shops for food. I absolutely loved my stay but I’ve detailed a few differences with this cottages to what you might expect so that you can get an accurate impression. The most important thing is the cottage does not have running water or a bathroom. You will need to bring drinking water, and water for washing/dishes/sauna is hand pumped from a well outside. There is an outside composting toilet, which is perfectly fine and was not difficult to use even as I was there in winter… I just needed to put on a jacket and shoes and was comfortable. The stairs are very steep, not suitable for anyone unsteady on their feet. Downstairs is the bunk bed. Upstairs has a double bed and a single bed (no walls or doors though, it’s an open mezzanine level). Wood for the fire is included and you use dried bark as the firelighters. The central heating kept the house warm even without the fire. The Sauna is attached to the side of the house and uses a wood fire. It takes a couple of hours to heat up. There is also a big water tank in the sauna which uses a wood fire beneath to heat up, you can use this water for washing in the sauna. The instructions state only to use one lot of wood under the tank which was good advice as it got very hot and any more would have made it boil which would be dangerous. Miia also gave us use of a battery powered camping shower so we could wash easily. The cottage is on the river which is completely frozen over winter. It is walking distance from Villa Karhukumpu which we used for activities, where Jrki the owner was very kind and helpful. Overall I found Miia to be extremely helpful as a host, and the place is as beautiful as the pictures.

Location wise, It is very close to Ivalo airport and 10 minutes drive to Ivalo. House is located by the lake and few steps you can be on the lake. House is well maintained and host IIkka is very responsive to our needs. Thumbs up to IIkka. We came to Ivalo to see northern light. As house is secluded, we got to see northern light 5 consecutive nights.

We loved everything about our stay and think this is the best way to experience Lapland. Conveniently located close to the airport and stores, but also isolated and very private, right at the lake. Lots of space, very functional and well equipped. Paula is a brilliant host, she was very helpful and kind, we really enjoyed spending time with her family too.
