Hotels near Syros Island National Airport - JSY, Ermoupoli

Ermoupoli is the capital of the Cyclades, a beautiful city, clean, safe and very pleasant for walking, shopping and discovering. Staying in Ermoupolis allow the visitor of Syros island to explore the local culture, while going on beaches around the island provides a spectrum of choices according to the weather.

Kini was the perfect mix of Greek style beach resort and traditional village. Not too flashy but with many nice restaurants and an amazingly crystal clear beach. It is easy to walk around the whole village and beyond to other beaches nearby. We ate mostly in our villa but enjoyed meals on the beachfront at restaurants serving traditional Greek food at a good price. A great place to stay.

It was the first time for me when actually leaving into an old medieval neighborhood - out there someone is transposed into an ancient time! The picturesqueness of the places all around and the old atmosphere of the place worth all the money in the world. And the local people are so friendly and welcoming! Few streets down from our accommodation there is the 'downtown' of the neighborhood, with cozy small boutiques and restaurants / cafeterias, a very animated and colorful area, especially on evenings. It is quite easy to get around Ano Syros, but definitely one needs a good physical condition for that, as there are steps and slopes everywhere. Beyond each corner someone can find a cute alley or an amazing view of the port, an old house, a stylish garden, a church or a chapel. But going uphill to Ano Syros from Ermoupoli (the new city) requires quite an effort, either by car or walking. The parking areas are not close to the hill top where Ano Syros is located and they are pretty crowded, especially during afternoons and evenings. From the parking area one has to walk uphill for a while to get to any place within Ano Syros, which is not easy for those who are not used with this kind of exercise.

Lovely place by the sea with all the comforts. It is a place for families, not for a teen-ager. It is very good for anyone over fifty looking for clean beach, comfort and no hassle. There are three restaurants, two bars, free car park and it is ten minutes drive from Ermoupoli. You can get a bus every hour to go to town.

Vari is a small beach with two restaurants and three cafe's/bars and two convenience stores. It is about 15 minutes from Ermopolis and has a bus stop with regular bus service. The beach is protected from the north-east winds and has excellent clear water. Vari beach is popular with families.

We did not like Ermoupouli - frantic, chaotic and dangerous, impatient drivers just like all over Greece and parking is difficult. We did like the architecture of the city but the shipyards really do spoil the harbour. In hindsight we should have booked accommodation at Galissos and after driving there for lunch at Avli Taverna we felt it was a better prospect for a relaxed and less stressful stay. We drove to look for the Cave of Pherycedes but the signage pointed one way then the other. Why is there no attention to detail for tourists? They want our money but make it hard for us. We will not return to Syros and will instead return to the islands we have been to twice before and where we know what to expect. Ermoupouli is a rat race. Locals are disrespectful and impatient
