Tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum led by by an archaeologist was worthwhile. I really enjoyed going to the opera. I sat in a box which was hot and stuffy. I think it would be better to sit in the stalls. The Galleria d'Italia had an excellent exhibition of Neapolitan art from 1610 to modern times. I advise booking ahead to visit the Archaeological museum. Standing in a queue in the hot sun is not fun. I caught the funicular to Fuga and then walked to the Castle St Elmo for the view. I also walked from Plebiscito towards the seafront one morning. As a solo older woman I never felt unsafe walking in these areas or in the Metro.
I have found Naples to be a welcoming and energetic city. I never felt unsafe walking around during the day and the streets are lively and interesting. There are so many wonderful cultural sights, from the numerous churches to the incredible archeological museum. It is true that it's crowded and noisy so maybe not for the faint hearted, but I have always found a visit to Naples very rewarding!
TOURISTS BEWARE, This city is corrupt from top to bottom, especially the taxis. They'll try to rip you off and charge double, then insist you settle up with cash so they can pocket the whole wad. The Central Train Station is Dangerous especially after dark. Single women are unsafe there !!
Pompei and Vesuvius were great. The city of Naples however is not. I fear for this apparently lawless city. Scruffy, unloved and neglected the beautiful architecture is rotting before your eyes, if you can make it out under the many inane layers of ugly graffiti. The infrastructure is crumbling. The centre of the town, particularly the historic old town, is an unfriendly, risky battle zone between bandits on scooters, cars, scam artists, trashy shops and a disinterested unfriendly population. I would avoid it completely and if you want to visit Pompei and Vesuvius then stay elsewhere, Sorento etc. Beyond the town centre to south and west is more pleasant and better kept with Chiaia a nice area and the wealthy zone around the west of the bay and into the hills is better and safer.
I’ve been to Italy 3 times, this is my first time at Naples. I think I like a mixture of things at Naples. Naples was added as a last minute thing because I originally was going to Puglia after my stay at Almafi Coast. A direct train access to Pompeii is a big plus. Easy access to metro stations and you get to see Italy as it really is. Pompeii is well preserved and you can imagine the bustling activities of Roman Pompeii.
The food and drinks in the city are excellent and very affordable. However, the service is terrible — staff are rude and unhelpful. The city is extremely dirty, with very few trash bins available. Public transportation is poor: buses are dirty, drivers often ignore pedestrian crossings and traffic lights, and almost no one can speak English to provide guidance. Even at major tourist sites, English is rarely spoken, making it difficult for visitors to navigate. In summary, while food and drink prices are attractive, the city’s cleanliness, service, and public transportation leave much to be desired.
