This was my first trip to Naples as I was lead to believe it’s a dirty and dangerous city. It is neither of these. Naples is an experience that photos can’t depict. It’s loud, expressive, passionate and welcoming. My husband and I walked all over Naples, the historic center, Spanish Quarter, port area, around the train station, and the northern area near the coast. We never felt uncomfortable or saw any negative dealings. It was amazing how welcoming and friendly locals were. We will definitely visit again.
We enjoyed walking round the Centro Storico and the Quartieri Spagnoli - very atmospheric. Naples is within easy reach of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Capri. There are plenty of good cafes and restaurants around.
Loud and dirty. Initially I was not comfortable but ended up not feeling unsafe once I got past the garbage everywhere. There is a lot to see in Naples if you look. But I would say, it is a city that is ok to stop over in on your way to somewhere else. And that is a shame because I found the people and the historical aspects in architecture and other visually enticing things to see amazing. I just wish the city, despite people claiming to be proud and independent people, was reflective of the pride they speak of.
Our tour of coast by the B$B host was brilliant! Did not enjoy Amalfi itself, too many people. Herculaneum was great, really great archaeologist guide. La Locanda Gesu Vecchio was great for Italian and Soraya Persian Restaurant was a very happy find - quit and clean, deliciously tasty food.
Do your homework before visiting! Some areas are just large touristy places because of all the cruise ships and tour buses. There are so many other nice places to visit once you get out of that zone. Be sure to confirm with taxi driver your rate BEFORE you leave, and WHEN YOU ARRIVE! We had overpaid at airport when arriving for taxi to our residence. Upon leaving, we decided to use a Lyft App "FREE NOW" to avoid that. Unfortunately, even though the App listed the expected rate, and the meter in the car reflected a lower rate, we were charged approximately 12 Euro more to the credit card! Highly recommend San Severo Chapel/Museum for some unique experience. Use the audio guide! (You must reserve your ticket early, so plan ahead)! Local shops are friendly and helpful. Eat pizza!
The city is super dirty, streets full of garbage, there is foul smell everywhere. No parks, no trees in the squares or streets. The buildings are mostly dilapidated and neglected, even in the city center. On the contrary, the museums (e.g. Capodimonte or Archeological Museum) are truly amazing. It is sad to see beautiful 2000-year-old marble statues and then go out of the building and see abandoned Galleria Principe di Napoli just in front of the museum. The worst thing is the traffic though - not only constant jams - the true hell are the motorcycles and scooters. They go left, right and center, in between the cars, red light no problem, and they are fast. Every time you cross the street, you are grateful you survived. As a tourist, buy your souvenirs in any city of the Amalfi coast as there is just the cheapest junk in the shops in Napoli. No artisan lemon products or cosmetics, no pretty chocolate shops. Also, consider yourself a Sherlock if you find a good wine in the city. We tried hard and the only place we found closes at 21:30. My recommendation is - Royal Palace, Museo Capodimonte, Archaeological Museum, Galleria Umberto I and Napoli Cathedral. Go to Herculaneum and Pompeii. Avoid badly lit streets after dark and be careful in the street at all times.
