The owner is an artist so it's a beautifully decorated house. And at $50 in high season for a room with a balcony what an amazing value. Including a simple breakfast which was just fine. It's not in the city center but it's only one block from a bus that goes directly to the city center and comes every few minutes.
If you are looking for a conveniently located yet quiet neighbourhood as base for exploring Malta, it's a good place. If you expect party and nightlife at your doorstep, you might want to look somewhere else.
This was our first time visiting Malta. Il furjana is full of interesting buildings and historical sights. We went on two bus tours one to the north and one to the south of the island and took the ferry across to Sliema. We learned a lot about the history of Malta whilst on the tours,Well worth doing. After moving from the awful Tritoni Boutique Valetta hotel we managed to book last minute a room at the Cumberland Hotel for 5 nights, perfectly situated right in the heart of Valetta amongst lots of bars and restaurants. We also stayed one night at the Grand Excelsior ten minutes walk from Valetta with lovely views across the bay as the Cumberland were fully booked and couldn’t accommodate us for the total of 6 nights Both hotels were excellent. The rooms were large, very clean, the beds comfortable with perfect bed linen, bathroom toiletries abundant. In addition breakfast options were vast. Well presented, fresh and your choice of hot breakfasts provided on request. I’m celiac and nothing was too much trouble for either hotel. The Cumberland provided a vast array of cooked breakfasts with Gluten free options. the Grand Hotel Chef offered to make me gluten free pancakes too if I wanted them but they had a choice of gluten free breads, muffins, lots of fruit and much, much more more. I would definitely go back to Valetta.
As Malta is a small island wherever you stay it is not a great distance to travel anywhere, the only problem is the ammount of traffic so can take a bit of time to get from one end to the other. Plenty of places to visit in Fgura from multiple restaurants and bars to museums, forts etc. & can catch a ferry to Valetta so plenty to see and do. There is also a land train that does a 45 minute tour of fgura
During my short stay, I had the beast meal at a little bistro very close to the apartment. Other food options were available too. I hated the public transport and the fact that you have to wave to the bus driver to stop otherwise they just drive pass you. I wish somebody told me that beforehand. Also, buses are never on time and they are around 15-20 minutes late. However, they are quite frequent and you can get everywhere in 10 minutes. I liked the Sunday flea market in Birgu and the whole Three Cities area.
Loved Valletta! The buildings, the history, the people were all beyond expectation. We went the first week of October and the weather was perfect for walking around the city - mid twenties every day although you may have the odd rain shower at this time of year. Despite the fact you are in a tourist city we never felt that we were being taken advantage of with prices for coffees, drink and food being pretty consistent throughout the city and quite reasonable. The public transport system especially the buses is very good whilst taxis are quite reasonable too. And of course just about everyone speaks English! But take good shoes with you as you will be doing a lot of walking - and most of it up and down hill...!
