Do not book during a Mariners home game. The traffic was insane in downtown and I-5. Pike Place Market is 4-5 levels of shops, art vendors, wine tasting, nice restaurants, seafood, exotic fruits, fresh fish, herb garden - a true delight.
We came to Seattle by accident! Our flights to Vancouver Island were cancelled given an Air Canada strike so flew to Seattle instead thinking we could get to Vancouver by car and from there to Victoria. In the end we got the Clipper Ferry from Seattle to Victoria which was a wonderful trip and likely saved us time. Also spotted whales on the journey, a nice bonus. We had just a day in Seattle, went to the Chihuly Garden and Glass which was truly amazing then took the Seattle monorail to downtown, visited the market. Didn't do the Space Needle, another time maybe. What an amazing place and has given us the taste - we'll be back!
The tourist stops were great: the Space Needle, Chihuly garden/glass (needs better signage to navigate the area), Pike Place Market. The amount of homeless, especially the individuals with mental illness was very concerning and so very sad.
Enjoyed fabulous sunny, cool weather in late September. Lots to do and see at the newly opened Waterfront, and of course the Pike Place Market was hopping. Had very limited time to check out the Seattle Art Museum, but got a good recommendation from the staff to head first to the native art collection, which was amazing and very worth it. Lovely gift shop at SAM, as well.
Great city with beautiful nature and architecture. The overwhelming history! The more you know, the more you want to learn! Also, some places are overestimated. I won't recommend some parks as they are dirty and full of homeless people. The famous Olympic Park has sculptures, that we found mockingly simple and not eye-catching.
Things we recommend in Pike Place Market; Piroshky, a small bouquet of flowers for your hotel room, Daily Dozen for coffee, tea and doughnuts, and so many stalls with beautiful artwork, glasswork, and native american artwork and beading. A lively and fun atmosphere! The Underground Tour, Bill Speidel's - outstanding. The Pink Door - make reservations, for any meal; we celebrated our 40th anniversary complete with a complimentary carrot cake to share. The Can Can for a show and/or meal and they have an incredible cocktail and absinthe selection. We bought a city pass (3 sites) so we visited the Chihuly and MoPop and ate at the restaurants in both. Prices were comparable to other Seattle restaurants, maybe a bit cheaper, and the food was unique and delicious. And the Space Needle - pricey so still on the fence of worth the visit or not. Nice gift shop, though. Getting around was easy - we walked. We Ubered a few times with a mobility challenged friend. We took in a comedy show at the Moore Theatre - hilarious. We saw a show at Unexpected Productions Improv - funny, with audience participation. We would love to see more shows and take a Seattle Architecture Foundation tour. Von's Sourdough pasta; although we were told there is always a bit of a wait, we had an unusually long wait for which we received aplogies and comps. - worth the wait! There was plenty more to see and do but we ran out of time. We hope to visit again.
