This place is AMAZING. I didnt know, but it is a traditional Japanese country house, more than 100 years old, tatami floors, futon bed, little gardin looking to the mountains. It was one of my best stays in my Japan trip so far. Also, Ashi (the host) is super nice, he even drived me to Magome the next day free of charge. Thank you, Ashi. I recommend very much.

Well beyond expectations on almost every level: kindness, hospitality, food... First of all, the host is really responsive both via the Booking message system and Whatsapp, which is a plus: even before getting to Japan we already chatted to arrange a pick up from the station to the hotel. So, if you are worried about the distance from the city center, forget your worries. Second: the host's kindness and hospitality were even beyond the (already high) japanese standards and he also spent some time with us suggesting things to do and places to visit. Also, every other person working there was super-kind and sweet, we really felt welcomed. Third: the food. The owner is a really skilled cook, offering an outstanding kaiseki-style dinner and breakfast, with both regional and national delicious dishes. One of the things that drove our choice to Nagataki were some previous reviews about the food, and we can confirm it was even beyond our expectations, with special attention to both the taste and the composition. Last, the Nagataki charm. Here each host has its own traditional Japanese house, which is just an amazing way to experience a slice of traditional Japanese life. Also, the hotel has got a small onsen that - being few people in the structure for the night we spent there - was split in two private onsen. So, to sum up, we cannot recommend Nagataki enough: if you are undecided, give it a try and you won't regret it.

Magome Chaya guesthouse is right in the middle of the small town of Magome. Could not ask for a more central location. The location along with the hard working and friendly staff made for an incredible stay. We did not do dinner, but we did have breakfast. The food was simple traditional Japanese breakfast, but was very hardy, tasty and kept us going on our hike that day. If you are going to hike the trail and need a simple friendly place to stay, this is it.

The accommodation and facilities were lovely. The foot onsen was a real bonus after a big day's walk. Everything was well organized and the customer service was excellent. Our late arrival was accommodated on last minute's notice. We had a beautiful and delicious dinner which was conveniently prepared for us. The tent and the site had everything we needed including a firepit and a wonderful view.

Superlative traditional ryokan experience with attentive, gracious staff in magnificent garden setting and impeccably maintained late Edo period detached residences. Outstanding, highly creative in-room dinner and breakfast included. Transfers to station and Nakasendo post road walking trail through forest and restored villages provided. The ultimate Japanese experience! Beautiful old village. The staff were really accommodating and gave us good advice regarding the walks in the area, and the availability of local buses. We walked along the Nakasendo trail to Tsumago on the day of our arrival, and then to Ochiaijuku along the wonderful Ochiai stone path on our way back to Nakatsugawa. We had booked dinner in Magome Chaya as everything in the village closes at 5 pm, and this turned out to be a very varied and copious Japanese meal.

The hotel looks like a beautiful little village for preservation. We slept in a small house that is over 150 years old. The staff is lovely, always looking for ways to help. Dinner and breakfast were works of art.
