Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Situated along Tanohara River and surrounded by tranquil nature in Kurokawa Onsen hot spring area, Oku no Yu Ryokan offers charming Japanese-style accommodation and various hot spring baths. It also boasts a thermal-heated indoor swimming pool. Free WiFi is provided in public areas. We booked a Japanese-style riverside villa with our own private bath — the spacious interior and beautiful outdoor views were well worth the price. There were many different types of public baths too with varying views/ambiances. Dinner and breakfast were top-notch — you can tell that they’re made of quality ingredients.

The villa with a terrace and mountain views features 2 bedrooms, a living room, a TV, an equipped kitchen with an oven and a microwave, and 1 bathroom with a bidet. Guests can take in the ambience of the surroundings from an outdoor dining area or keep themselves warm by the fireplace on colder days. At the villa, there is a dressing room for guests to change in. Easy 10 min walk from Uchinomaki station, so accessible also without a car (just watch the train schedule since trains are only once per hour or so). This is just one train stop from Aso station, so provides easy access to Mt. Aso and the surrounding area. The kitchen is fully equipped (cutlery, pans, condiments, etc) and there is a small grocery store nearby to buy ingredients. Rooms are large, and there is a kitchen, 2 bedrooms and a japanese - style bathroom. The piano in the living room was a great and unexpected bonus. We were passing through and only stayed one night, but it would have been a great base to explore the Aso area and we would have loved to stay for longer.

Guests can enjoy a meal on an outdoor dining area while overlooking the garden views. Additional in-room amenities include chocolates or cookies. We arrived in the evening, in the downpour and darkness, feeling lost in the middle of nowhere. A cozy cottage was waiting for us: with heating on, beautifully furnished to the smallest details, very clean, very well equipped, comfortable. Just perfect. Due to an accident with a broken car window, we had a pleasure to meet the host. He helped us complete the formalities, secured the car for the rest of our journey and made sure that the remnants of glass wouldn’t have hurt anyone or anything. It is difficult to express how grateful we are and we regret that we cannot give a higher rating

This very unique looking hotel was villa style. We found it not problem, and it was close to local amenities. We were greeted by a very friendly member of staff who showed us around a very spacious apartment. Which had dining area, separate bedroom, bathroom and toilet. This hotel was a gem 💎 There was an amazing view, and bus stops 5 mins away in either direction.
The room was spacious and the historic atmosphere of the hotel was wonderful. The cave onsen was interesting, but not very hot honestly. Situated along the riverside was dramatic and so picturesque. I was fine sleeping on the futon mattresses on the tatami mats, but my friend complained that she was very uncomfortable. The food was ever-so delicious, but just too much for us old folks. It is a very romantic atmosphere and walking around the village was enjoyable.
The authentic dining and private bath experience, and staying in a property that was apparently a couple of hundred years old belonging to a samurai. A pleasant walk to the property from Aso station surrounded by the Aso mountains and through a quiet Japanese village is memorable.
It's a very beautiful place, like a village with traditional European style. You could take a walk around the courtyard. We live in the 2F, and while entering the house, you could smell wood ( Hinoki ).
Villa and private Onsen are amazing
It is an old building right on the river, in a great location for the village and onsens. There was free coffee in the lobby before or after breakfast. We had a corner room with a great view of the river.
Lovely staff, the house itself is in a great location in Sakitsu village. Charming and tatami-style.
The Ryokan is next to the stream and a small charming shopping street, a very quaint onsen village. The dinner was delicious, and staff was attentive.
The owners were so friendly and nice, they knew we were looking at houses to buy and were excited to show us their beautiful kominka (old Japanese house). We asked about a laundromat in town and they let us use theirs, which was great because the other one closed before 7pm and we would've had to rush back from dinner or our onsen in Kurokawa village. We didn't cook but the kitchen in this cabin was big and perfect for longer stays and cooking meals.
