Just 250 metres from Zenko-ji Temple, Matsuya Ryokan offers simple Japanese rooms with tatami-mat floors, a green-tea maker and an attached Western bathroom. The hotel features public baths. An absolutely wonderful place to stay to experience a traditional Japanese Ryokan. The breakfasts were varied each day and beautifully presented. The fact that the Ryokan is located at the start of the Zenkoji temple complex made it even better. It was only 3km from the train station so okay walking without bags. The advantage is because of its position you could walk just a few meters to pick up a taxi to the station which only cost 1200Y.

Loved the Bell tents, well laid out. Warm and cozy. Comfortable. Not to far from the main building, but far enough away to have good privacy. A great overall layout on the property. Loved and appreciated the foot onsen after a day of hiking Nakasendo. We ordered dinner, and breakfast and both were yummy and very generous sizes.

Our room was spacious and comfortable. Traditional Japanese breakfast included. Conveniently located, few minutes walk from the main station and Matsumoto castle.

It maybe a little bit difficult to find the exact location through driving, but the house owner replied messages very frequently and give great help.

My friend and I really enjoyed our time here. It’s an incredibly cute guesthouse with a great vibe. The shared kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of utensils to use and enough space to enjoy a cozy meal. There’s even a kotatsu! We also messaged them after booking to ask whether the room was mixed or female-only, as we were a bit concerned. We received a very quick response reassuring us that there was no need to worry and that a female-only room would be prepared for us. The owner is super friendly, and her positive energy is contagious. :) Since it’s located in an onsen town, there are plenty of opportunities to relax after a day of exploring. The "onsen" was a big plus after a day of hitting the slopes. We will definitely recommend this property.
