Set in Koyasan, 37 km from Kishi Station and 44 km from Matsushita Park, 高野山 こころの寺子屋リトリートハウス -Koyasan Retreat House IKKOSHO offers accommodation with free WiFi and access to a garden.

There is a shared bathroom with shower in every unit, along with free toiletries, a hairdryer and slippers. I really liked this quiet place to stay. A traditional and cozy house. My hosts were kind, patient, and supportive. They offered guidance and encouragement whenever I asked.

Located in Nachikatsuura, 10 km from Nachikatsuura Sports and Cultural Center and 11 km from Hirou Shrine, みなみ野フィールズ不動坂 offers a terrace and air conditioning. Set 8.8 km from Fudarakusanji Temple, the property offers a garden and free private parking. We are experienced travellers and our stay in the cottage was by far one of our favourite things we’ve ever done. We decided to book it for 2 nights at the end of our Kumano Kodo walk, and we’re so glad we did. We spent our entire time there without leaving the cottage, it was so beautiful. First of all, the cottage: This is a beautifully constructed cabin, with an incredible view and was very comfortable. A dream setting. We had the place to ourselves, even though the photos on the Booking website made it seem like we’d have the owners living next door or something, but that wasn’t the case. We had all the necessary appliances to make food, and the rice cooker was fantastic. We cooked rice there that Katsuro grows himself. The movement of the sun, shadows, haze and clouds throughout the day, made for an incredible natural show that never got boring. The starry nights were beautiful, supplemented with the flash of light from a distant lighthouse. The whole experience even led to us getting engaged on the balcony! The host: A truly exceptional human being. The Japanese are known for being welcoming and friendly, and Katsuro (Ura) is the embodiment of all those great things that you hear about Japanese hospitality. He is warm, friendly, interesting, talented, and is genuinely interested in learning about his guests. He’s a former fireman, who now works in the fields as a farmer. We had several conversations with Ura and wish we could have had many more. Ura gave us delicious blueberry jam, some very nice persimmons, and the rice from his fields was lovely. In addition to all of that, Ura picked us up from Nachi Falls at the end of our long walk, took us to the supermarket, and made all the logistical elements of getting to the property so easy for us. Finally, on our last morning there, we were taken to the shrines where Ura used to go as a child and it was such an honour. What an amazing person Ura is. We feel very lucky that he shared his paradise with us. ありがとう。

Boasting a DVD player, the spacious chalet has a fully equipped kitchen with an oven, a microwave and a toaster, a living room with a seating area and a dining area, 3 bedrooms, and 1 bathroom with a walk-in shower and a hot tub. Towels and bed linen are offered in the chalet. For added privacy, the accommodation has a private entrance and soundproofing. The two stories allowed us to spread out a bit. The rooms were comfortable and had good AC, important for a very hot July. Nice bathroom and laundry. Very responsive host.

Taraichitei, a property with a garden, is located in Takashima, 28 km from Kehi Jingu Shrine, 34 km from Omimaiko Beach, as well as 40 km from Obama Station. This lodge provides free private parking, a shared kitchen and free WiFi. It is an old style house, so as long as you aren't expecting Western/modern comforts, it's fantastic! My daughter called it the Totoro house. You will sleep on Japanese futons that you lay out on the tatami mats - if you've never slept on a futon it might feel uncomfortable/hard compared to Western beds. You will eat sitting on the tatami mats, but there are a couple of small Western chairs if sitting on the floor is difficut. The bathroom is Japanese style with the toilet in one section, the sink/vanity in a second section and the shower with separate furo (deep bathtub for soaking after washing in the shower) in the third section. It was not the most modern but all clean and more spacious than the Western hotel bathrooms we had other parts of Japan! There is a TV, wifi worked great and a bluetooth speaker to play music. There aren't a lot of "tourist" attractions nearby but it you want serenity this hits the spot - a few steps away has you walking among farming fields and the house is also close to the forest with a little stream running along side the road making for a peaceful but easy walk up the mountain. The gohan (rice) cooked in the old style stove was the best we ate our entire trip! Wish we had bought some of the local rice. It can get a little smoky when dinner is being cooked but my mild asthma was fine. The host, Hiro, is amazing, super accomodating and friendly, he introduced us to his shiba inu (dog) and his duck, and even though we didn't ask ahead, he prepped for us to make tofu - this experience was an extra fee but totally worth it! During the winter you can also request mochitsuki (pounding rice into mochi) and summer/fall you can make noodles (can't remember if he said soba, ramen or udon). Hiro's English is limited, but he's so engaging, we asked him to eat dinner with us and my daughter loved that...he has such good energy!

Situated in Kyoto, 1.6 km from Kyoto Imperial Palace and 3.5 km from the centre, Daisenji Lodge Ing features air-conditioned accommodation with free WiFi, and a garden. It is set 3.2 km from Kyoto International Manga Museum and offers private check-in and check-out. The holiday home has private entrance. Staying at Daisenji Lodge was an amazing experience. We picked up our keys from the Daisenji Temple that is located right next to the apartments; very easy and straightforward. We were contacted on the booking.com app multiple times with detailed instructions about everything. The apartment is very spacious; a family of 4 or 5 would have plenty of room. They even have mangas and a PS3 for children (or playful adults)! The location is great; a 5 minute walk to subway station and the nearby supermarket that has delicious prepared meals. Very close to the Kamo river and the beautiful park that runs along its length (great for birders!). The washer/dryer is very convenient for longer stays, and the bathroom is amazing as well. In general, I cannot recommend this place highly enough!

This property offers access to a terrace, free private parking and free WiFi. The property is allergy-free and is situated 21 km from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Incredible location and the serenity is real. A true Japanese experience, with a lovely village setting. Absolutely loved it. The smell of the amazing wood in the bath room was a highlight. All the things you need to cook and live for the few days you are there. Highly recommend. Worth the drive out of Kyoto to experience the city but stay away from the hustle and bustle.
