Gateway to Coffee and Cake
Schwechat is a small city just inland from the lush southern banks of the Danube River and is home to Vienna International Airport. Fast trains, S-Bahn underground trains and buses connect the airport to the Austrian capital, so you can be enjoying coffee and cake in no time.
The A4 motorway links the airport to Vienna via Schwechat. Just off it is an oil refinery (one of the city’s main industries) which makes a much prettier sight than you might imagine when awash with bright lights at night. Nearby is the Schwechat Railway Museum and the Austrian Aviation Museum is also within the city.
The New Museum details the city’s heritage in a building overlooking Felmayergarten park. A few streets away is a river and another green space on the other side surrounds private Rothmühle Castle with its bulb-like towers. Kaiserebersdorf Castle is an even simpler structure and between them is the Schwechat Brewery which serves local beer alongside tasty delicacies.
In the countryside between the city centre and airport is a golf course, but despite all this, it’s the Schwechat accommodation that is the real draw. As well as airport hotels with shuttles, there are guest houses and apartments with parking that are cheaper alternatives to those in Vienna.
