FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

I'll start by saying that I love Canberra...it's so easy to get around by car, attractions are easy to get to and all that I visited had ample parking facilities...free at the War Memorial and Mint but user pays at The National Gallery and Old Parliament House. Staff at all of the above were exceptional when it came to customer service...no question was too hard, or too simple...staff at all the above answered all my inquiries with grace and charm. I spent the entire day at The War Memorial and didn't get to see everything on display...the Last Post Ceremony at the end of the day was quite moving. The National Gallery had significantly altered its displays since I last visited two years ago...I was slightly miffed at the lack of any paintings from members of "The Heidelberg School" but got over that as I wandered through the current displays.

Yes, enjoy Canberra.

Yes, enjoy Canberra. Elected to visit National Gallery as priority. Excellent choice for sights and eating. Other sites available included the near by National Library, and the further away National Museum. Did not have enough time for the latter two. While my visit only one night, it reminded to pleasures - and multiple options - in Canberra. (In my case arrived by bus from Wodonga,Vic and took bus to Sydney. Great modes of travel.Inexpensive too!

So many locations to see, plan your days so you can fit them in. Must see are, Parliament House (Old and New), War Memorial, AIS, Art Centres and so much more. worth visiting the Information Centres to get maps and brochures (Staff very Friendly). Civic Hotel and Capital Brewing Co. both worth a visit.

Definitely require a car to move around Canberra.

Definitely require a car to move around Canberra. I stayed on Northbourne Avenue but didn't use the tram - why doesn't it have the Sydney and London system of tap on/off with your debit/credit card? (A really bad error by the Council/Tram operator). I enjoyed the Canberra Centre, the National Gallery, the National Arboretum and the National War Memorial (again). Would have visited the National Portrait Gallery and National Museum if I have more time.

I liked the sense of open space.

I liked the sense of open space. Our location had everything we needed close by. I intend to return for leisure, rather than work, so that I can actually see more in Canberra. It is definitely worth another visit.

The Ramada Diplomat staff were really accommodating and allowed an early check in which I really appreciated. My room was spacious, clean, comfortable and warm. Reception provided accurate walking directions for me to grab lunch in the day, and dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant was excellent. They also provided the invoice as requested for this work trip. Highly recommend to all visitors to Canberra, the location is also very convenient if travelling by train. Thank you Ramada Diplomat team.

We usually stay at the Kurrajong when we visit Canberra. I like the hotel’s connection to Canberra’s history which it celebrates through the decor. The rooms and facilities are very comfortable, the colour scheme throughout restful, and the restaurant’s menu offered us excellent choice.

I have been visiting this hotel on and off for over 20 years - it is an institution in Canberra. It has clean, comfortable rooms, an excellent breakfast, accomodating polite staff, well equipped bathrooms with excellent bath, shower and amenities, and a great location.
