Manaus is ugly and charmless.
Manaus is ugly and charmless. The real attraction of Amazonas state is the Amazon Rain Forest itself, so either skip Manaus altogether or 3 days is plenty of time to get the feel of the place. Even the food culture is relatively bland and unexceptional. If you do decide to stay in the city, go to Presidente Figuereido to see the waterfalls. Manaus as a city is ugly and charmless. Except for the downtown area, there is nothing architecturally of interest. It's an industrial working-man's town with very little to recommend it except the surrounding Amazonian forest. The food is good if you like fish. Otherwise, I had only two meals during my three week stay that were memorable. I was studying Portuguese there, so my teacher and other students made the trip memorable. The people are generally quite lovely, but there is a strong strain of Christian Evangelicalism.Guest review byAntoineUnited States - 8.0
Manaus is an interesting city in the middle of the jungle.
Manaus is an interesting city in the middle of the jungle. To think that if one decides to go in any direction, one will end up in the jungle. It is a city where the only two ways to get to, are by airplane or boat. I am not sure you can get there by car, but if it were possible, I would not try it.
