Location. It is great. I visited in beginning of October and it was easy to get there by public transport during that time (it might be different when snow covers the mountain pass). Tickets for some of the local cable cars were included and for some other ones I got a discount (I've used free cable cars only as I've stayed for one day and there was only that much I could visit). I would really encourage to walk around the lake that is down from the hotel as it is beautiful and the view from the dam is also great! Breakfast was very nice as well. One thing to keep in mind - hotel is high up (1900-2000 meters) and if you are not used to mountain hotels, you might have worse sleep quality, not because of the beds or something, but because air is thinner up there and your body need to adjust to that.

Had a wonderful week there. Exactly what we were after! Direct access to the ski tracks, a sauna, lot's of space to read, play, work or talk in a very in-distractive environment. And even the yoga lessons. Will return definitely. Everyone is so lovely and you feel welcome from the first moment.

A beautiful family-run hotel in a magnificent part of Switzerland. The views along the Goms valley were outstanding. My room had a view along the length of the valley to the mountains around the Furka Pass. I was given an upgrade to a larger corner room which was extremely comfortable with a king-size bed, desk and sofa. The couple who own the hotel gave me a lift from the station on arrival and back to the station on departure. Breakfast was very good with an outstanding selection of different bread. Ham and/or salami was for you to slice yourself on a traditional machine. Excellent coffee. One real novelty was a multi-purpose tap on the landing providing chilled, sparkling and boiling water.

The Astoria Hotel is very nice and as I understand popular place for travelers not only on the car, but also for bike. They have a big parking spot, nice view to the mountains from balcony. Very clean and cozy room with comfortable beds. Very nice, helpful and friendly stuff.

Obergesteln is a great starting point for cross-country...

Obergesteln is a great starting point for cross-country skiers. The sunny trail is a big advantage in the morning. The sports shop is right on the trail, where you can rent equipment. The few restaurants offer excellent food.

A small, manageable village with train and bus connections,...

A small, manageable village with train and bus connections, generally every hour by train to Andermatt or Brig, and by bus to Oberwald or Fiesch. It's a starting point for short hikes as well as mountain tours towards Gletsch and the Grimsel Pass. One minor drawback: there are no grocery stores in the village itself. A trip to Oberwald (approx. 3 km) is necessary for that.

A lovely little town on a beautiful motorcycle route.

A lovely little town on a beautiful motorcycle route. A cozy, traditional-style hotel. The interior is partly modern but tastefully decorated. A pleasant, family-run establishment with very friendly staff. Excellent regional cuisine.

Obergesteln's main attraction is the series of rather well-preserved old barns located slightly outside the village. Alternatively, Obergesteln can be a stopover on the way to the Grimsel Pass or the Furka Pass, or a stop before taking the steam train from Oberwald to Realp.
