Kilpisjärvi in winter is a magical experience. The village is located in the far north of Finland, in the heart of Lapland. It is a popular destination for winter activities such as skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. The area is also known for its stunning scenery, with snow-covered forests, frozen lakes, and the majestic Saana fell. One of the highlights of a winter trip to Kilpisjärvi is the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. The village is located in an area with minimal light pollution, making it an ideal place to view this natural phenomenon. The Northern Lights can be seen on clear nights throughout the winter, but the best time to see them is during the darkest months of December and January. Hiking trails are well signposted.

Hiking trails are well signposted. The supermarket at the center is very good. Public transport connections could be better but the twice-daily bus to/from Rovaniemi is very reliable. Tour operators organize day tours to the Acrtic Sea in Norway. They sound good but unfortunately were cancelled in summer 2021 due to the covid crap.

Lovely place, cozy wooden cabin close to the shop with a sauna! The owners are really nice, had kitchen with the basic utilities fit for enjoying cozy meals. I will absolutely come back, and Kilpisjärvi is a wonderful place. Great location for Northern Lights! 🌌 One note: the bedroom is up the stairs, the ceiling is quite low, I (1.65 m) had to watch my head quite often. Taller people, be aware 😊

An absolutely beautiful place to stay with massive windows to overlook over the snowy wilderness. The rooms were modern and very comfortable. Restaurant facilities at the hotel were great and again featured massive windows to look out from.
