The purpose of our visit to Canterbury was to drop our son to university. We booked 2 nights are the hotel. The hotel is situated a few minutes drive from town, it is a quiet location set in from the main road. We had been advised that all the food prepared in the kitchen is cooked fresh. The breakfast bar offered great choice and the food is consistently replenished as needed. On the second night we decided to eat dinner at the hotel and it did not disappoint, the food was fresh and delicious. The most important thing for me when staying at any hotel is the cleanliness and staff and this hotel excelled in both. It is obvious that the Manager and his team take great pride in their work to ensure guests enjoy a comfortable stay. The team and their manager are a credit to The Holiday Inn Group.

FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Canterbury was wonderful.

Canterbury was wonderful. The old town and the cathedral are amazing. The river with the ducks and the gardens are wonderful. We went there for Christmas and had a wonderful time. People were extremely cheerful and nice. Thank you Canterbury!

Not much help here.

Not much help here. We chose both Canterbury generally and the hotel specifically so that we would be able to attend the Cathedral 'Midnight Mass'. Eating out in Canterbury itself, particularly during the Christmas period itself, is atypical, and we didn't eat anywhere Leeds castleexceptional. On Boxing Day, however, we went to Leeds Castle, which can be thoroughly recommended - easy drive, plenty to do, see, etc.

Canterbury is a beautiful city even though it was very wet we had a lovely time. We went to complete our Christmas shopping and we were not disappointed. The markets are good and there are stalls that offer real handmade crafted goods. Our hotel was central and we found lots of lovely places to eat and to grab a coffee. We will definitely go back!

The Cathedral is a must as it is surrounded by many historic buildings as well as the views of the Kings School. The ruined Abbey is nearby and worth a visit. The lack of vehicles in the central area is wonderful. Several pleasant parks are within the city and some small rivers cross the it. The library and museum are well worth a look particularly the museum with a reasonably good collection as well as regular featured exhibitions.

Canterbury is beautiful. The cathedral is a must. The Christmas market lovely but shuts at 6pm! We ate in the Cosy Club which was good. As a disabled person, the cobbled streets can be a bit painful on the mobility scooter!

Super interesting history at the Cathedral, St Augustine Abbey ruins, the old town, St Martin's church. There is a popular cat cafe and plenty of bars, restaurants and shopping. I was there in late November and some of the open hours were shortened. A beautiful and interesting visit nonetheless.

Very friendly and helpful staff, who provided maps and information on Canterbury. Easy parking (free), treat , bed mat and bowl for our dog, excellent room ,newly refurbished. Breakfast was very good , with good quality produce, and yet again excellent young staff. Easy walk into Canterbury. Will definitely stay again if in Canterbury area. We stayed in 13 different hotels on our trip to UK, and this hotel for reasons mentioned above is our number One hotel , well done.

This is the fourth year that I've stayed at the hotel which speaks for itself. My room was large and comfortable and I was made to feel very welcome by the staff. The restaurant serves a good breakfast and a wide selection of food on the dinner menu. There's a comfortable lounge bar with outside areas at the front and back of the hotel. It's well situated just off the main road into Canterbury and within walking distance of the city centre and both railway stations.

The hotel is very convenient for Canterbury town centre. It is located opposite the Marlowe Theatre. We were able to leave luggage after checking out. The reception staff were very helpful and pleasant. The rooms were well presented and the beds were comfortable. Wifi was good throughout. The en-suite bathrooms were very good. Breakfast was very good and nicely served in a light and pleasant space dining room (the former bar). I would stay again.

The hotel is not 100% what it looks like in the photos however it’s a very quaint little place and has value for its money. It’s in a wonderful location less than a 10 minute walk to the city centre. Despite being next to a busy roundabout it’s very quiet. It’s a lovely place to stay for a few nights whilst exploring Canterbury. I’d stay here again.
