We loved the location, peaceful during the night, but a nice cosy feel during the day. The food was excellent. We had breakfast and dinner over our three night stay and would recommend the food highly. The bedroom (No 3) had a very comfortable bed and modern bathroom, which was great.

Dockray is a very quiet village consisting of the Royal hotel a few farms and local home owners properties. Nicely situated for Ullswater, Keswick and Pooley Bridge it is surrounded by stunning scenery and peaceful walks. Great for walkers, birdwatchers etc I would stay there again, very peaceful.

The pub has a challenge to climb Gowbarrow Hill.

The pub has a challenge to climb Gowbarrow Hill. We did it before breakfast and there were beautiful views from the top. There are walks from the village but a car is needed if you are going further afield in the Lake District.

Local hotel in Dockray good value, excellent food.

Local hotel in Dockray good value, excellent food. Nearby pub in Troutbeck even better. Walking superb, trips up Great Dodd Fell and the smaller hills around Matterdale. Keswick good for a rainy day.

Lovely location for climbing the hills to see over Ullswater and climbing down length of Aira Force waterfalls. Good position to explore the area; only 20 mins by car from Keswick and easy access to and from the South via the Kirkstone Pass Hotel itself provides good menu choice and the food is well cooked and worth the price.

Good location and really good food both in the evening and at breakfast. The breakfast menu was extensive and catered for vegetarians and vegans really well. The staff were very friendly and looked after my medical dietary needs really well. The room was spacious and had a good view. The building's history and the link with Mary Queen of Scots was interesting. We would recommend the Royal Hotel and would stay again

The food was excellent, especially the breakfasts and the Sunday lunch. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The location was convenient for walks in the Ullswater area, especially Aira Force, which can be reached on foot from the hotel. A car is essential since the hotel is not on a bus route.

What a gorgeous property! The photographs certainly don’t do it justice. It was the little touches that made it- the underfloor heating on, orange juice and Prosecco left in an ice bucket! Felt like we’d walked into a boutique hotel- slippers, bath robes. Cannot recommend this little gem enough.

Excellent location, very quiet and easy to get out for a dog walk without having to pass busy areas. Hotel with beer garden is only a few meters away. The accommodation was clean and comfortable with everything that we needed.
