We absolutely loved the location. It is atop a hill so a fairly steep climb but once you are in the city, castle and cathedral views are phenomenal! The Holi and Bhang restaurant serves some delicious food. The selection at breakfast was nice too. Excellent hospitality.

Location is absolutely perfect for visiting the Cathedral and the Castle. The room was well appointed, excellent clean bathroom, superbly comfortable bed. Staff were very friendly and helpful and breakfast was fabulous - great selection and porridge was wonderful. Honestly, we cannot fault and look forward to our next visit. We certainly wouldn’t look anywhere else. Thank-you!

This is a local pub and not a 5 star hotel. It is one of my favourite places to stay in Durham. I am usually there alone when visiting my aged mother who is in a care home nearby. The staff are welcoming and friendly. I always feel safe there, I am happy to visit the bar alone in the evening. The breakfasts are well cooked , the pub and rooms are clean, there is parking and the location is good for access to Durham city and the surrounds.

FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

WE loved our visit to Durham, it is a very compact city to spend time wandering through. The history of the city is intriguing and the cathedral is most impressive. The shrine of St Cuthbert is a most peaceful spot to spend time contemplating and to visit it was the objective of our visit, so we were not disappointed. We organised a walking tour of the city with a local guide which was very worthwhile and entertaining. We could certainly have stayed a bit longer. We enjoyed a very special evening at Crush wine bar where Daniel helped us choose a flight of wine and we shared grazing platters to help the whole lot down. We also spent an evening at a performance by Durham Dramatic Society at the City Theatre, which was most diverting.

The cathedral was the highlight with the tour by Mike proving very entertaining and enlightening. Crook Hall gardens were near our hotel and we enjoyed going through all the ups and downs of the different little areas with interesting trees, bushes and plants some of which still had a few flowers despite it being November.

Durham is a gem of a place with beautiful stone buildings and lots of woodland and riverside walks ; a market hall, cobbled streets , picturesque streets and a knockout cathedral . The bus service is excellent and the city is very walkable with paths, bridges and pedestrian areas. Friendly atmosphere , international and diverse cuisine , plenty of cafes , many dog-friendly . The river is live and has wildlife right into the city - cormorants and kingfishers for example. Recommended .

Beautiful City. However.

Beautiful City. However. Unless you are really into art and light installations AVOID going during any possible future Lumiere festivals. City is way over crowded. Difficult to book tables. Pricey. Massive Queues with ZERO toilet facilities. Spoilt what would have been a better experience. Choose summer

Loved Durham we have been before there’s plenty to see and do , plenty of lovely eateries and also some individual shops selling local crafts. We loved the old market which is still thriving unlike many towns these days there’s a lovely cafe in there too. We had a return visit to Beamish which us a place we love and the people are so friendly and helpful.

A great all round place with a sense of luxury. The hotel had a restaurant attached which was particularly convenient on a Sunday night . The restaurant had authentic Indian cuisine which was tasty and not too difficult for those of us who find ery spicey foods difficult. Breakfast was good . Staff very helpful with suggestions of how to best travel back and forth to the old centre of Durham.
