FAQs about hotels in Exeter

A Host of History

Set around the Exe River, affluent Exeter has played a part in English history from the Roman era to William the Conqueror to the Spanish Armada. Its most impressive structure is the cathedral, begun in the 11th century and boasting the longest stone roof in England.

The surrounding green is a popular picnic spot, and the half-timbered buildings and red-brick façades of the neighbouring High Street house a host of shops. Even more are in the Princesshay and Guildhall shopping centres.

The Guildhall itself is considered England’s oldest municipal building still in use, while nearby Parliament Street is one of the world’s narrowest streets. The remains of 11th-century St Nicholas Priory are now a museum, and there are more red-stone ruins at hilltop Exeter Castle (or Rougemont Castle), built into the Roman walls.

Exeter Central Station is behind the castle, while St Davids Station is nearer the university. The large student population means that the city has good nightlife, and some bars are located by the Quayside, site of Custom House. The river flows past Topsham and Powderham Castle to enter the sea at Exmouth.

To the east are Exeter Airport and the Westpoint Arena exhibition centre, both easily reached from Booking.com’s hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses with parking.

Well the White Hart has got to be the place to stay!

Well the White Hart has got to be the place to stay! The city is fairly flat with a great variety of small shops as well as the usual high street brands. It is brimming with character with the timber framed buildings, the beautiful cathedral and the remaining city walls glimpsed around every corner. It has such history attached to it and the variety of lovely old churches and cobbled streets really takes you back in time. It also has it's fair share of historic pubs alongside modern restaurants and a beautiful witherspoon housed in the most stunning old church. This is sad to see in a way but the amount of people congregating on a Sunday socialising was lovely. They may not have been in a church service but they were definitely partaking in some bread and wine! Forgive the pun. It least it has not been demolished or turned into luxury flats. Exeter is a wonderful city and not to be missed.

I went to college in Exeter 60 years ago because, at that time, I lived in Devon. So much has changed but I still liked it and we found everything we wanted. We have found that the further away from London the nicer the people, ie the West country and the north of England.

The Cathedral is worth a visit, and the tour guide gave us a lot of information. On Sunday, the visit is by donation, and comes with a guided tour as well. On any other day, I would happily have paid more for both. The Exeter Underground Passages tour is also worth a look. Everyone has to duck, though. Traffic was slow and difficult downtown, we were glad we walked there when we could

Easy to see Exeter on foot from our hotel as a flat 10 minutes walk into the centre. Leaflets available from the nearby museum for historic walks round the town. Cathedral a must see. Lots of excellent shops and restaurants. We used Apple taxis to get up to see family in the university. They were very quick and cheap. Do look out for the hills around the edge of Exeter, quite steep gradients in places. Try eating at On the Green overlooking the cathedral for lunch and Bella Italia for dinner.

I think we saw the important sights in Exeter during our one night stay. You could stay longer and venture more and further away given parking permits in and out travel, yet for us the closeness to center city and major sights was enough. Highly recommend hotel.

Exeter Cathedral tours and concert at night; Knightshayes Court, A la Ronde, the Museum of Dartmoor Life at Okehampton where Swift Taxis provided tour of five villages on edge of Dartmoor National Park where my ancestors lived and the younger generation emigrated to Australia. Disappointed that church at Ottery St Mary was closed. And would have liked cruise but some cease on 31 August.

Raffles is a small, friendly, cosy family hotel located less than ten minutes walk from Exeter city centre. It has off-street car parking behind the hotel. It is a few minutes walk from the University's Northcott campus and five minutes' taxi drive from St. David's station. The staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast was great. The warm bedroom and heavenly bedding made for a very good night's sleep.

The location is perfect for getting up to the airport and for enjoying all that Exeter city centre has to offer. The bed was comfy. The price per night was one of the cheapest in Exeter. One of the staff members went above and beyond and kindly helped us when we needed a flight ticket printed.
