We stayed in Carisbrooke, a bus ride to the centre of Newport, which is a great base for buses to all parts of the island. Loads of pubs and eateries to choose from, and all the shops you could wish for. We are keen walkers, and there are some lovely routes around Newport.

Ideal location for exploring the Island.

Ideal location for exploring the Island. The variety of good real ale pubs and eating places were a lot less than when I was first in Newport around 15 or so years ago. We tried several pubs, and a tea room/bakery, but on balance the best were not in Newport. The best for drinks - beer at least and wine - was the Newport Ale House; and for food and drink, the Union Inn Cowes, the Red Lion Freshwater, the Bargeman's Rest Newport, the Castle Inn Newport, and top of the list the Highdown Inn Totland Bay ... but there are more to try when we next go for a week of exploration and hiking!

excellent place to visit all parts of the Island as the bus service seems to visit everywhere. Only had two days but we were able to visit the Needles, Carisbrooke Castle, the Wild Life Sanctuary and Osborne House.

We wanted to visit all parts of the island so its central location with a variety of pubs and restaurants was ideal. However, it’s not the prettiest place on the Isle of Wight and the traffic at rush hour was heavy and compounded by roadworks.

Not the most exciting town but a great centre for visiting the isle of wight by bus as most routes start and finish there and the buses are reliable - I used it as a base for walking the first half of the coastal path. It also has a reasonable choice of eating places

The town itself was not inspiring.

The town itself was not inspiring. WE only spent a short time in town. WE stayed a few miles ouside and the surrounding countryside was very nice. Good location to explore the island - although the size of the IoW means any base is never far from anywhere!

Great location brilliant staff, Simon the new proprietor could not have been more helpful and welcoming. He only took over on Tuesday and was faced with some very worried and angry customers from the previous owners who could not contact the rebooked accommodation (Charter House) opposite He handled the situation perfectly and everyone was sorted ok. I will definitely stay there again and recommend the Wheatsheaf as a pub and hotel 👍

The accommodation was perfect for our needs, being well equipped, warm and comfy. The hosts had provided a travel cot with bedding, which was ready for us when we arrived. We were left a welcome pack along with a Christmas and New Year card. The location was great, very quiet but close to Newport for supplies. I loved the idea of having wheelbarrows for guests to use to unload vehicles 😁

A very warm welcome from staff on arrival was nice and the building is incredibly characterful. The town centre location makes it easily accessible and it was incredibly good value for money. Room was of a very good size and was clean and fresh on arrival. I think the hotel fundamentally has everything it needs but a little bit of modernisation in the rooms would go a long way!

Clean and well equipped appartement in a historic building. It has a lovely english design. We liked the short walk to the city centre of Newport. The Isle of Wight has a highly developed bus network and its central node is only a 10 mins walk. For us the Doplhin was a perfect basis for discovering the island without bringing a car.
