FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

THE most amazing city!

THE most amazing city! Filled with mystery and intrigue, so many independent shops and creative souls here - have to mention Bertty’s Rascals - they are so delish! Tea room next to the minster is nice for breakfast and the shambles market has great stalls too!

Lovely historic city with lots of activities for all people - featuring museums and galleries, top brand shops and restaurants, bars and activities for the young, everyone's got something to do. The city is clean despite how busy it is and the people all seem very friendly and welcoming. Lovely place.

Great place to visit if you are interested in historical sites. Lovely medieval downtown area, with an almost overwhelming amount of places to eat out or shop. If you have visitors and you'd like to show them traditional British towns, this is certainly a place to take them. Also, uniquely, most of the city walls are accessible and free, best way to explore.

York is a very pretty place.

York is a very pretty place. We were on a treasure hunt, and got to see much of the city and places of interest. The Shambles area was very busy at the weekend, and we found all the bars got very busy around 6pm. There are a lot of traditional pubs, which are very welcoming and cosy (we tried a few over the weekend). We walked along the city wall for some lovely views, and had a stroll along the river Ouse. It's easy to get around on foot, although if you want to travel around, there are plenty of buses, and of course the railway station, which was once the largest station in the world!

Been to york many years....love the place but, and this may not be popular, Harry Potter on the Shambles may be good for business but has ruined the experience for other shoppers and l tend to avoid the hustle of the cramped pavements

York tries to accomodate disabled drivers (blue badge) with dedicated bays and far more lenient fees. Much appreciated. Plenty of history but beware - lots of tourists ( our visit was at half-term). Plenty of choice of cafes, bistros, restaurants of all nationalities.

Such a lovely hotel to stay in. Staff super friendly and could not do enough when I had a small issue with my meal, replaced and drink on the house given! Beautiful breakfast and catering for dogs with water available, dog friendly rooms and full use of the foyer and reception area at night with them. Very relaxed evening at the hotel after a day in York. Perfect location for park and ride, 15 mins on the No2 bus into the city centre. Our second visit to mercury and will definitely be back

Didn’t have breakfast as 50.00 for 2 seemed a little excessive and had a nice breakfast close to hotel for half the price. The staff were very friendly professional and helpful particular the door men who helped with parking. The room was huge for a city centre hotel and very comfortable with small details appreciated like Milton brown toiletries and Yorkshire shortbread fab bathroom too
