The Simplicity of the Emerald Coast
Olbia is all about the sea, and what a glorious turquoise sea it is. As the gateway to Sardinia’s stunning Emerald Coast, this down-to-earth town is often overlooked in favour of the more glamorous resorts. However, it does have attractions of its own.
The simple Basilica of San Simplicio dates to the 11th century and the Church of St Paul the Apostle is also medieval. The National Archaeology Museum houses Roman ships, as well as prehistoric artefacts from the surrounding area.
Sardinia has a wealth of prehistoric structures and one of these – the Tomba dei Giganti Su Monte‘e S’Abe – is near Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport and medieval Pedres Castle. Across the bay is Sa Testa Sacred Well, dating to at least 1200 BC.
Along the coast in Pittulongu are the real attractions – fantastic, unspoilt beaches from where you can see rocky Tavolara Island, a popular diving site. In summer, boats sail there from Isola Bianca Harbour, the arrival point of ferries from the Italian mainland. The harbour’s fishing boats are responsible for the fantastic mussels in Olbia’s seafood restaurants, some of which are amid bars and shops on Corso Umberto – the locals’ favourite passeggiata spot.

You definitely need a car to get around but the cost is definitely worth it. The area is lovely and a boat trip to La Maddalena is a must. Photos do not do justice to the crystal clear turquoise water and unspoiled beaches. This is high praise coming from someone who rarely goes to the beach! This stay was my first and hopefully not my last but I would have stayed longer if I could have. We enjoyed good meals in various places including a recommended restaurant at a small beach which was atmospheric with a beautiful view. I don’t think you can go wrong wherever you choose to eat. Olbia can be a good base for the main tours of the island.
Olbia can be a good base for the main tours of the island. Is right next to La Tavolara, close to Costa Smeralda, 30 min to wineries in Vermentino di Gallura, 1 hour from Palau and La Madalena, and 1h30 from Orosei and Baunei coasts. It is also a better city than I expected. The farthest is La Pelosa, but still at 2h hour drive. The town center is quite small, but pleasant to walk and visit. We did not spend time in the town. Instead we went to the beach and used local hiking trails. The area is still unspoiled and not over developed. I recommend using bug spray if out on extended walks on coastal trails.The archeological museum was closed for renovations. Olbia as an urban city has a wonderful centre. The harbour and plaza areas are beautiful as are the two main churches. There is a great park with lots of play and sport facilities for all age groups. - across the road from the Martini hotel. There are also children's play areas situated along the harbour front There are numerous really good Italian and fish restaurants. There is a good selection of craft, souvenir and clothes shops to suit all budgets, We would have liked to have visited the museum but there were conservation conferences being held there the week we were visiting. We visited the small harbour front market and the larger Saturday market. During our week-long stay we spent one day at Mamas beach and took bus trips to a few of the small villages nearby, but to fully appreciate the beauty of Sardinia I would recommend hiring a car.Guest review byTetley18United Kingdom - 10.0

Gea had looked after our 2 bike bags after our first 2 nights here. It was lovely to return to Kaina which felt like our home in Sardinia! This was by far the best place we stayed (we stayed in 7 similar places,similar priced) and by far the best breakfast. Gea is wonderful host. The breakfast had a few choices and very tasty coffee. They also had a bar so you can have a drink, while waiting for room to be ready or a chill out after beach of before dinner. The local bus stop was at the top of the road and the supermarket a ten minute walk along the road.
