The Simplicity of the Emerald Coast
Olbia is all about the sea, and what a glorious turquoise sea it is. As the gateway to Sardinia’s stunning Emerald Coast, this down-to-earth town is often overlooked in favour of the more glamorous resorts. However, it does have attractions of its own.
The simple Basilica of San Simplicio dates to the 11th century and the Church of St Paul the Apostle is also medieval. The National Archaeology Museum houses Roman ships, as well as prehistoric artefacts from the surrounding area.
Sardinia has a wealth of prehistoric structures and one of these – the Tomba dei Giganti Su Monte‘e S’Abe – is near Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport and medieval Pedres Castle. Across the bay is Sa Testa Sacred Well, dating to at least 1200 BC.
Along the coast in Pittulongu are the real attractions – fantastic, unspoilt beaches from where you can see rocky Tavolara Island, a popular diving site. In summer, boats sail there from Isola Bianca Harbour, the arrival point of ferries from the Italian mainland. The harbour’s fishing boats are responsible for the fantastic mussels in Olbia’s seafood restaurants, some of which are amid bars and shops on Corso Umberto – the locals’ favourite passeggiata spot.

Olbia can be a good base for the main tours of the island.
Olbia can be a good base for the main tours of the island. Is right next to La Tavolara, close to Costa Smeralda, 30 min to wineries in Vermentino di Gallura, 1 hour from Palau and La Madalena, and 1h30 from Orosei and Baunei coasts. It is also a better city than I expected. The farthest is La Pelosa, but still at 2h hour drive. The town center is quite small, but pleasant to walk and visit. We did not spend time in the town. Instead we went to the beach and used local hiking trails. The area is still unspoiled and not over developed. I recommend using bug spray if out on extended walks on coastal trails.The archeological museum was closed for renovations. Olbia as an urban city has a wonderful centre.
Olbia as an urban city has a wonderful centre. The harbour and plaza areas are beautiful as are the two main churches. There is a great park with lots of play and sport facilities for all age groups. - across the road from the Martini hotel. There are also children's play areas situated along the harbour front There are numerous really good Italian and fish restaurants. There is a good selection of craft, souvenir and clothes shops to suit all budgets, We would have liked to have visited the museum but there were conservation conferences being held there the week we were visiting. We visited the small harbour front market and the larger Saturday market. During our week-long stay we spent one day at Mamas beach and took bus trips to a few of the small villages nearby, but to fully appreciate the beauty of Sardinia I would recommend hiring a car.Guest review byTetley18United Kingdom - 10.0

Its a great place to stay to discover the area (east side of the island), its right in the middle to visit La Magdalena and Oroseo Gulf. There is plenty of restaurants and things to do/visit. The beaches around the city were great as well (pitulongu, port istana). Olbia is a great spot when you plan to explore the northern or eastern part of the coast. It is a nice city with lots of cafes, restaurants. A car is a must, so you can travel freely without limits. Staying in Olbia without a car would be rather tricky and get you bored quickly. As a HQ for your travels is perfect.
