Look Beyond the Leaning Tower
If you are in Pisa then the first stop is probably to snap a memorable picture of the famous Leaning Tower. Arrive early and you just might get a chance for a solo shoot! Go beyond this legendary experience and discover a maze of ancient cathedrals, buildings and squares in this historic town.
From the Pisa Centrale Train Station, the 30-minute walk to the Campo dei Miracoli is along a pedestrianised street packed with shops and restaurants. If you head outside the touristy area you will start to uncover the atmosphere created from the some 60,000 students who study here.
Appreciate masterful art at Museo di San Matteo and Romanesque architecture at the San Paolo a Ripa d'Arno, San Michele in Borgo and San Paolo Churches. If your feet tire then hop on and off one of the site-seeing buses to get a different look at Piazza dei Miracoli or the dome at the Cathedral of San Ranieri.

Attractions were great but the city itself is dirty and too many pedlars and beggars. Police were there in numbers but not acting to stop tourists being hasled. Also be careful with buses as we bought paper tickets at the station and they were flimsy and dont buy returns as they only last 70 minutes. Pisa is a city of two halves.
Pisa is a city of two halves. South of the river Arno to the station is more real with some great bars and restaurants. North of the river, and towards that tower becomes a bit more touristy. We visited before the university came back and so it was possibly a bit quieter. The museum at the Arsenal was fascinating and that tower was more interesting than I expected. Pisa, in my opinion, only has two things: the tower and the airport. The Leaning Tower is worth a visit, but it's best to combine the visit with your arrival or departure date from Italy. A really lovely town with a nice pace of life.
A really lovely town with a nice pace of life. Never too packed or busy but with a nice vibrant buzz at the same time. Great for it's own attractions - the tower is quite beautiful, as well as the cathedral etc. The botanical gardens are definitely worth a relaxed visit, and loads of good places to eat or have coffe or gelato. It's a little pricey, but worth every penny; it's more of a 5 star stay. The leaning tower is a 20 minute walk away, so not completely central, but the walk is lovely.
