Positano is a colourful Italian town in the Campania region, near Naples. Overlooking the turquoise blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, this seaside paradise is home to traditional terracotta houses on a steep hill and a small marina with fishing boats.
Set on the Amalfi Coast, between the Lattari Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the holiday resort of Positano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient Roman architecture. Built in 1920, the old church of Santa Maria Assunta with the imposing dome is one of the main landmarks of the city. According to the legend, sailors brought the Byzantine icon of the Madonna after their ship got stopped in Positano and heard a voice saying ‘stop, stop, stop’.

The area is lovely.
The area is lovely. But way too may stairs to climb with luggage. Google was the worst so we doubled the stairs. The beaches are rocky. Streets are cobble. It’s a terror on the feet. I feel like the travel writers way over rated these areas on Amalfi coast. Way a lot of tourist in late Oct. Basically all the shops carry the same stuff. Go to one and you’re done. Yes I’m glad I came and it was short but a boat ride to visit them all in a day or 2 would be enough!! The best place I ate was I stopped in a deli. The food was great! Bad thing is there is no place to sit. It’s stand and eat. But the owners were very accommodating! Not at all very gluten free, dairy free of night shade free. But u can get by. Town is most beautiful seen from the sea or a high terrace. Friendly people. Gets overrun by tourists, even October. Lots of hills and steps, and taxi’s are a flat rate of 35 euros, adds up fast. Better to walk and avoid traffic jams. La Pergola on the beach for pizza, also for spaghetti and clams. Ohima for great vibes and good food. Il Pallazo for special evening. A wonderful stretch of coastline despite the local drivers! Other main hazard the lack of parking places - particularly appreciative of the private parking space at our house. Despite that, accessible to Pompeii, Amalfi, Ravello, Capri etc. all of which we visited in our four night stay. Positano is a total zoo!!!
Positano is a total zoo!!! The alleys are jam-packed with people and lined with shops selling tourist junk. The roads are extremely curvy and hazardous to walk on (shoulders are about 6" wide). Beautiful place.

The fornillo area is much better than downtown Positano.
The fornillo area is much better than downtown Positano. Its not Chaotic at all. Its more relaxed ,you can walk down to town ,there are 30 odd bars and restaurants between you and the main town and most of them are with a cliff top with a view of the ocean .What I like about this area is that you always feel like a local at this place and the people love your companyGuest review byStuartAustralia
