    Great museums.

Great museums. Lots of reasonably priced restaurants, provided you steer clear of the really touristy bits. Very crowded, even mid September. If you're staying for a few days get a vaporetto pass. It makes life so much easier when out and about.

Although it’s a unique city with an extraordinary history it’s well overrated. Locals are only friendly if you buy something from them. Witnessed twice pickpocketing situations and didn’t see one policeman around any day. Buying tickets online is also tricky as they’re always joint to another venue. Credit cards are not widely accepted and had to argue every time not to pay cash. Took a gondola ride and enjoyed the gondoliere swearing and arguing with the other gondolieri the whole trip. Paid to see the glass blowing demonstration expecting to be an amazing experience and it was just a peep of the process which lasted around 20 minutes however it’s sold with a different description. Eating out tends to be cheap but you’ll also meet cheap service and quality. Most places add service and cutlery charges automatically so check beforehand. Public transport is cheap and convenient.

We visited St Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, Bridge of Sighs, Interactive Da Vinci Museum. We walked for miles even on the first day when it was raining. Venice is still lovely in the rain! And less crowds too. I enjoyed a cannoli or two and also tiramisu with a beer or two.

Venice was beautiful, so different to anywhere else we have visited, due to all the canals and getting around on water boats. Murano and burano are definitely worth visiting, really beautiful places. San Marco square in the evening was magical with loads of orchestras playing live music outside some of the restaurants. Check the price of drinks before you sit down though at San Marco square, as one restaurant on San Marco square wanted 18 euros for a lemonade, so we didn't end up getting a drink there.

This must be one of the best hotels in Venice. Even though part of a large hotel chain, it still has the small family hotel atmosphere. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble with staff going beyond their call of duty. The position of the hotel must be the best in Venice, literally on the Grand Canal opposite a beautiful church Santa Maria della Salute and only minutes away from St Mark's Square. yet still peaceful away from the crowds.
