Great onsen, which included outdoor pools with sea view. Great gluten free breakfast and dinner for the of us with a wheat/gluten allergy. Lovely, friendly and attentive staff, some spoke good English. Pretty location, Great hiking nearby on the peninsula.

We booked our trip last minute and so accommodation was a challenge but this gem was definitely the best place we stayed. The owner is incredibly helpful, friendly and kind. The view over the mountains and sea is just sublime, and rounding it off that you're staying in a rustic Japanese log cabin - its the full package in my opinion.

I got a whole apartment to myself for the night and it was spacious clean and comfortable. I’ve paid a more for a lot less in Japan therefore I was really happy with this. And the location is just off the kamino which was amazing

MaruHouse was our favorite accommodation during our Kumano Kodo trip. Check-in was smooth, and Maru was kind enough to pick up our bags from the station so we didn't have to walk the trail with all our stuff (turned out to be a great call since it rained a lot later in the day). The location is very convenient as it is a short walk from Kii-Katsuura station. The bath was great - equipped with hot water - perfect after a long day of walking. We were also really pleased to find a kotatsu in the common area. We cooked some of our meals, and the kitchen was well equipped and easy to use. The beds were clean and comfortable. We wish we could have stayed longer - it was a very nice and well kept house!

This place was excellent. It’s right near the train and bus station and feels brand new. Owner check me in and was lovely and helpful. The whole place feels brand new and smells like fresh wood. It is impeccably clean and beautifully fitted out.

I spent one night in Kii-Katsuura after walking the Kumano...

I spent one night in Kii-Katsuura after walking the Kumano Koda Daimon-Zaka section up to the Nachisan shrine and waterfall. It is a four hour train ride from Osaka but we’ll worth it to see this beautiful area in Japan. Just to warn you, the iconic red pagoda near the waterfall is currently being restored and is covered in tarpaulin until early next year. Katsuura is a sleepy fishing and onsen town. Visit the fishery on the port at 7am to see the daily tuna auction. A great experience is bathing in the cave onsen at Hotel Urashima on an Island five minutes by ferry from Katsuura.

The place was perfect to venture every day to gorgeous...

The place was perfect to venture every day to gorgeous places, part of the so called ‘Kumano Kodo’ route, visiting the most breathtaking locations we have ever seen. Local buses take you to every direction: from the Nachi Falls to Hongu (via Shengu), all of which are the main reasons, to visit Nachi-Katsuura. Walking around the quiet town, however, is also a good idea: the seashore is spectacular, walking or biking around, and admiring the charming, original old houses, dotted around the place. You can also witness a genuine tuna auction, a ten minute walk from the house, if you are willing to get up before 7am. Most importantly, I must mention local people. In general, all over Japan we find people charming and kind. In Nachi-Katsuura they go out of their way to help you! We were looking for a bakery (there are several, with yummy products) and a local resident, we only asked to instruct us in the correct direction - actually walked with us to three, before finding what we were after. Equally, all bus drivers were so helpful always, we just fell in love with them. Our host was equally kind, as were his friends: helping with our luggages, and serving us wonderful food at his lovely restaurant.
