We were travelling around on motorbikes and found this fantastic guesthouse, which was very clean, with spacious rooms and all amenities required within striking distance to Mt Aso. The owner was very helpful, even helping us book ferry tickets to Shikoku, and the attached Izakya had great food and atmosphere.

Hiroshi-san was an amazing host! :D He made sure we had everything we need and felt comfortable when we arrived, then very generously made dinner for us as well. He's very warm and a great conversationalist with amazing humour, talking with him was probably what I enjoyed the most about our stay. Hosting aside, the place was very clean and well prepared. It's a Japanese style house that had some really pretty wooden decor. (I do really enjoy old furniture :D) The room was comfortable and warm, he had towels and other amenities prepared as well. We were also invited to his cafe for breakfast the next day, which turned out to be lovely! I'd definitely recommend staying here especially if you like meeting new people. Hiroshi-san seem like he really enjoyed hosting and would make sure you have the best time you can there.

As soon as I arrived there, the owner of the place, Shinichi, rushed to join him to let me taste the fish he had caught that morning, in Shabu-shabu. I immediately felt at home. In the evening, some friends of his came to eat with us, including an adorable old lady who was no one's grandmother, as well as the manager of a neighboring inn and her guests. Moment of pure happiness. For ¥2000 per person we had a simply divine meal cooked by the host, consisting of an incredible salad with eggplant, cherry tomatoes and fish, shabu shabu with all kinds of fresh fish caught on same day by Shinichi and rice. It's definitely worth it because he is an excellent cook and the products are just amazing! Japanese style room with tatami, very basic but perfect for me and with a view of the sea! They lent me a bike and I took some wonderful walks around it. I also had the chance to see the arrival of the fishing boat and the trophies of fish. It was great. Sukumo Box is a very warm place and it is appreciated if you participate a little in the life of the house, which will return it a hundredfold. One of my fondest memories of Japan. I will go back there for sure.

Friendly, helpful staff, only too willing to assist Henros, and a great location, next to a konbini. The room was very comfortable, and the shower very good.
