We had a great stay at Shoraiso for our honeymoon in December. Service is unparalleled and the staff are doing above and beyond to make us feel like home without being intrusive. We love the elephant decor of the room and the beautifully landscaped garden, and the private onsen is definitely the highlight of our trip. Breakfast and dinner are included and the food is just exceptional (very tasty with fresh local ingredient and creative presentation). The location is quite convenient - 45min train from Nagano to Yudanaka station and hotel is just a few min drive away (the hotel can arrange pick up). Monkey park is quite close (around 15min taxi away). Overall we couldn’t recommend this hotel more!

Everything!!! Incredible location, steps from the slopes, very comfortable room, great WiFi, rental on site - great people and equipment from Snowcan rentals - very good baths! A few meters from the bus stop. And the food is just out of this world ; and the chef is so good and such a kind person!!! Great breakfast and just amazing dinner!!! You have to go halfboard!! But the best is the people, all the staff is so kind and helpful, and the manager is the most friendly person ever!!! I had the best birthday ever staying at this hotel !! We have to come back !

The food was awesome. Room large for japan. Staff tried their very best with any request. Ski hire was the best quality, and the ski hire staff really knew their stuff. The reception offered discount lift tickets. We arrived in a blizzard and could not access the resort. They sent a vehicle at no expense to pick us up some distance away. We were so grateful after a day sitting on a non moving bus.

The monkeys are marvellous.

The monkeys are marvellous. Of course they are attracted to the valley by the food they receive regularly but they are totally free to come and go. So entertaining and endearing to observe how they interact. The park was created in 1964. Beautiful forest in a mountainous area that grows apples, peaches and grapes and lots of vegetables. Pay attention to the hotel you choose. Avoid Hotel Housei.

For a tourist location, it was hard to find restaurants open...

For a tourist location, it was hard to find restaurants open, or willing to seat us (a party of five). But in general the food was good and the location was great for hot springs and access to the snow monkey park.

The Onsen hot springs experience was unique and for anyone wanting to see how the Japanese hold this aspect of their beliefs in such high regard this area is a perfect example and for a couple of days you can immerse yourself in a different cultural and culinary experience that will be the highlight of your holiday and the truest insight of this unique way of life.

Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow...

Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow monkeys. The walk to the monkeys was very pleasant (but it is advisable to wear wellingtons as it is very mucky). There are many small Ryokans in the town - sadly all of varying standards. Our recommended one was Tsuyuru Ryokan. Great little place run by the amazing Yoko.

The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous.

The Jigokudani Monkey Park is absolutely fabulous. We went at opening time and stayed all day. The morning offered the best viewing as there were less visitors(Most day trippers from Tokyo arrive in the afternoon). It is still very popular throughout the day but there is much more chance of getting a preferred angle to photograph the monkeys in the morning. However opportunities arise throughout the day. Just a note - I am a professional photographer.

We had the whole 2 week trip with good snow, yet my wife was...

We had the whole 2 week trip with good snow, yet my wife was more interested in seeing the snow monkeys! I agree that the monkeys were amazing, but if planning to go, get snow spikes for the walk up, as it is icey and slippery and these are essential. We ate at a few restaurants and the Prince west hotel, and had no issues with any food consumed

We really liked that there were 2 onsens that could be privately booked for free as part of the hotel stay. The hotel also give you a key to access all 9 onsens in the onsen town and is located with very close proximity to these. It was also really cool accessing the private onsens through an underground passage way and this also led to the main street and a small bar. The beds were comfortable and the room was spacious with an area to pack the bedding away into and also the suitcases.

The facility is packed with great amenities. The rooms are large, well equipped, and beautifully appointed. A fully equipped onsen (with private bath rental options also), a restaurant, and roof top bar make this hotel an attraction in its own right. The majority of staff are also super lovely!

What a gem of a hotel located conveniently close to the Monkey Onsen and mountains. Very friendly staff and an authentic Japanese hotel experience. Amazing value for money, even if you miss out on the breakfast and dinner, there is always the burgers or restaurants in town that are also tasty.
