The host, Anja, and her family were wonderfully welcoming and beyond helpful, and accommodated for me travelling with a (sometimes moody) dog. B&B De Pottenbakkershoeve is near Meerlo, the hidden gem where time slows down, birds sing actual melodies (probably in harmony), and a nearby castle watches over the land like a benevolent grandparent. Just strolling (and running :) like me) around this picturesque village is like walking through a landscape painting. The bedroom I stayed in was royalty-level plush. I suspect even :) the Ritz hotel would take notes here. Think: enormous bed, equally enormous bathroom, and every modern convenience you didn’t know you needed until you spotted it gleaming under soft light. I wouldn’t be surprised if my room secretly hosted some design award ceremony when I wasn’t looking. And then there was breakfast ... oh, a peak of deliciousness: fresh fruits, cheeses, sliced meats, croissants, jams, butter, and everything else you’d want to power up for either a relaxing day ... or an 18-hour ultra trail run (more on that later). Speaking of Ron and Monique — what absolute legends! They met me at my perfect time (which, let’s be honest, isn’t always easy), responded to every request with a smile, and created an atmosphere that somehow struck the magical balance between warm hospitality and total privacy. I genuinely felt like I was in my own home! This kind of comfort was not just nice ... it was essential! I stayed here before and after the Petranpad Trail Run (112 km, 18 hours of fun and suffering), and the peaceful, supportive environment helped me recover both physically and mentally. Honestly, my legs and knees :) may never forgive me, but my soul thanks Ron and Monique! The wall in my Rose bedroom was covered by the famous “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life” commonly attributed to Mark Twain, but it seems to the motto of the hosts! Ron and Monique, thank you for everything. You didn’t just host me ... you gave me a home away from home (with better breakfast - please, do not retell it to my lovely wife!). 🙏❤️

Lovely little village totally destroyed during the second world war but totally rebuilt, quaint open areas lots of bars and restaurants in all directions, everyone we met was friendly and polite and enjoyed a conversation at every opertunity, well worth a stop, Overloon is only up the road with a huge WW2 museum to look around and the British cemetery for the fallen there too it's a great visit ( if you like your war history)

Venray appears very new - comparatively modern buildings -...

Venray appears very new - comparatively modern buildings - but it is definitely a weekend social centre with lots of cafes and restaurants. It also is quite a shopping town with lots of different shops ranged between the two main 'squares'. Heavily pedestrianised and loads of bicycles (it is Holland after all) it is a great place to stop and take a coffee. I can't advise about car parking as it was a short walk from the Hotel to the town so did stroll around a lot. There a quite a number of fascinating sculptures - including one that looked like a Hare and had a poem attached! Try the Greek Restaurant int the Square - great food and good value

Venray town centre is vibrant with a wide selection of cafes...

Venray town centre is vibrant with a wide selection of cafes and bars - and a superb ale bar (Goesting). The town has a friendly feel and is clean and tidy with the large church with its carillion chiming out regularly. We were there to see the nearby Overloon War Graves Cemetery - and there is another in Venray itself. They are well worth a visit - as well as the massive cemetery for the 32,750 German soldiers who died in the Netherlands at Ysselsteyn - also worth a visit to get a sense of the sheer scale of the loss of life - most on both sides being conscripts with no choice but to fight. The Overloon War Museum is immense with many interesting exhibits. Give yourself plenty of time to see it.

Lots of car-parking space upon arrival close to the front door despite the Hotel being fully booked. At check-in the Hotel was busy so a little patience was required. Owing to a major function also taking place here we were sorted by the Manager who has a great sense of humour. He got the Bar opened quickly and organised a table for all of us at a local restaurant (I forgot to mention there were 12 of us!) On a busy Saturday evening. He even organised early breakfast for us as we were attending a local event.
