We only stayed one night and did a whirwind tour. Steampunk to brewery to little blue penguins. Tees Street Cafe for breakfast and then we were off. I loved the quirkiness and historical charm and would like to go back. I think 2-3 nights would be more fun. Even 4 would be good. Not much to do in Oamaru, will recommend visiting the quaint museums, Oamaru heritage museum (pay/donate as you wish) and steampunk museum (NZD$15/pax). both were interactive and we enjoyed it with the helpful stuff. the day was a cloudy and rainy so we opted out of visiting the penguins - they have a live youtube stream of the penguins coming home which we watch. We did visit the penguins tour during the day, which was open to public and saw some fur seals relaxing. To watch the penguins coming home, it's NZD$45 per pax, which we thought was a little expensive. + the weather being bad, we decided to watch them online instead.Guest review byVerenaSingapore - 10.0

We went for the penguins but could have spent another day...
We went for the penguins but could have spent another day wandering around the Victorian Precient, Steampunk HQ and lovely shops of Oamaru. Also nice that it is only 30 minutes away from Moeraki Boulders. Riverstone Castle and Kitchen make a great stop too on the way down from Christchurch.Guest review byStacyUnited States - 10.0
I love Oamaru for a visit.
I love Oamaru for a visit. It is a very pretty place to visit with the historic area quite special. There are plenty of great places to eat, excellent shopping and being on the coast it has lovely views of the ocean. The blue penguin experience is well worth doing also. Riverstone restaurant is an absolute must if you enjoy excellent food. Highly recommend a visit there.Guest review byDebraNew Zealand

We like having a bedroom separate from the 'living" area, and this fit the bill. Violeta could not have been more gracious and helpful with restaurant suggestions. The "tourist" area of Oamaru is literally two blocks away and the penguin colony is also easily accessible. This place is so convenient, NOT on a major highway, and priced right.
