FAQs about hotels in Rotorua

A Volcanic Land of Wonders

Rotorua is living proof of the magnificent, and sometimes mind-boggling, might of nature. Smoking hot springs, bubbling mud pools and fast-spouting geysers give the surrounding landscape an almost other-worldly feel.

This New Zealand city sits in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s newest geothermal hotspot. It was created after the 1886 eruption that covered Te Wairoa Buried Village, between 2 of many lakes gracing this fertile terrain. By Lake Rotorua’s shores is the luxurious Polynesian Spa with its thermal pools. Just behind in Government Gardens are the city’s best cultural offerings: the Arts Village, Tamaki Maori Village and Rotorua Museum, in an elegant former bath house.

Native animals roam in Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park below Mount Ngongotaha, accessible via the Skyline cable car. The views while ascending make it obvious why this is called the Bay of Plenty. Tikitere Thermal Park on the opposite side of the lake is known as Hell’s Gate, but as long as you can ignore the sulphuric smell, the spas are simply heavenly.

More springs are in Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, whose surrounding forest is popular for mountain biking, and Wai-O-Tapu where the Champagne Pool is a striking mix of green and orange.

Booking.com’s accommodation range is as diverse as the scenery, encompassing luxury hotels, cheap hostels and motels near Rotorua Airport.

Great things to do either indoors if raining and outside...

Great things to do either indoors if raining and outside when fine. Cafes and restaurants reasonably priced. Some main street shops need a tidy up to keep attracting people there. Looking a bit run down now. Parks and public amenities looking good. Business staff where we visited very friendly and helpful ☺️

Visit to the Kiwi Hatchery was such a highlight.

Visit to the Kiwi Hatchery was such a highlight. We were fortunate enough to see three newly hatched kiwis. Musical Theatre in Rotorua is alive and well. If you get a chance to get last minute tickets like we did you won't be disappointed. Well done Rotorua. Rock of Ages was 5 star!

There are plenty of places to eat that's what I like about Rotorua, easy to navigate around to different places or events, I was there for the annual Aotearoa Māori Rugby League Tuākana Tournament.

A shithole.

A shithole. Street people, shitty shops, poor-to-basic food outlets using boosted resort pricing. Very obvious nobody comes to Rotovegas for the shopping. Perfect for backpackers who know what they like and what they want to see/do while there, I used to come for the mountainbiking back in the days when it was a niche pastime; one thing the place does pretty well is the biking.

We loved Rotorua, there are so many cool things to do solo or with a family. The National kiwi hatchery was wonderful and the kids favourite, we also loved the forest sky walk and glow worm tunnel, and the buried village. Top place to eat - the Fainting Goat pub in town, favourite place for Dad was Hobiton, favorite pick by mum The Secret Spot hot tubs (I recommend you leave the kids at home with dad and enjoy this place solo). It's a good idea to hire a car, we stayed a little out of town and also had fun just driving around the beautiful NZ countryside :)

I had a wonderful time at VR Rotorua Lake Resort. The hotel is located on the shores of the beautiful Lake Rotoiti, which offers stunning views and a relaxing atmosphere. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, with a private balcony overlooking the lake. I loved the deep bath, the luxury amenities. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the restaurant served delicious food with a variety of options. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for scenic and comfortable accommodation in Rotorua.

Great size room, nice and quiet with double glazing ( unlike a number of older Hotels on Fenton Street which can all be quite noisy ) Also location superb as right next to Eat Street and Lake. You can also use the Gym and Pool at the Novotel which was added bonus.

My favourite aspects of the Novotel Rotorua are the location and breakfast. Both are ideal I think. The room is good - nothing unusually good for a nice hotel, but good. Everything was there, it all worked and it was clean and tidy.

Pity about the front desk staff! They shouldn’t be in hospitality business! I had stayed in many millennium hotels in London many years ago…staff there always friendly & helpful unlike the Rotorua ones!
