Amarante is beautiful with a real feel of an old town in its centre. The cathedral in particular is well worth visiting. The local government has invested a lot in the public realm which is now very attractive and clean, with lovely walks along and across the river. One of the most beautiful, picturesque cities I have seen. Highly recommend to visit it, specially in July, when the Festival Mimo happens with lot of international and local musicians, artists are presenting their concerts. It is very democratic event for all ages, including activities like painting workshops, instrument experimentation, storytelling, and much more, all in an environment full of color and creativity. My wife and I spent four nights using Amarante as our base for the Duoro and North areas. The view from the bedroom and patio was amazing. Great food at multiple restaurants in town. quiet location where the church bells don’t ring after 10pm until 8am. A beautiful city with a really interesting central area.
A beautiful city with a really interesting central area. There is a waterpark outside the town and plenty of shopping at reasonable prices in the town. You can take a pedal boat on the river and the local government appear to be investing in the river aspect. The cathedral is a must see and has recently been renovated. Nearby is the museum/art gallery. There are some really lovely cafés and restaurants with terraces looking out on the river serving traditional pasteries and food. The house retained some features of the original property. It was set in a quiet area with nice views of the local village and hills from the terrace. The owner, Miguel, was charming, welcoming and extremely helpful with recommendations of the local area. Amarante was a 15 minute drive away, and had plenty of shops, restaurants and places to visit. Super comfortable mattress rooms are okay, not the biggest, but for a few days, it is enough. With access to the Tamega River. I enjoy my running first thing in the morning, which is the perfect excuse to admire the enchanted views for endless kilometres.
