Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.

We visited at end of September until 9th October the weather was about 22-25 degrees. It was quite busy with tourists and a lot of traffic. We stayed in the Lido area and it was our first visit to the island it was about 1&1/2 mile walk into Funchal but easy walking on a wide footpath. There is a promenade that goes from the lido area all the way to camara do lobos and is a fabulous flat walk. Beautiful Island will most certainly return. Only bad review was the rogue taxi driver who charged us 42 euros to go from bottom of toboggan run back to top to get Cable car! A great city to explore, with good restaurants (especially seafood), friendly locals and tons of character. Like the rest of Madeira, there are stunning sea and mountain vistas around every corner. A trip on the cable car up to Monte and the Tropical Garden is a must, as is sipping a "poncha" (the local tipple) at the bars along the esplanade. We didn't have a car, so had to get about Funchal and surroundings by walking, public transport and the odd taxi. There is a very extensive (and cheap) bus network, although information about bus stops and timetables is *really* hard to come by. I love Madeira but Funchal has limited activities and shops. To get the most out of Madeira you need to venture out of town, ideally in your own transport, and see the island scenery. The weather/climate was just perfect.
The weather/climate was just perfect. We went in mid September but apparently it's like that all year round. We found the restaurant and shop staff very friendly and didn't mind that we were English and couldn't speak Portuguese. Thirty minutes walk from the old town. The rooms we had were side facing sea views, and truly superb. We spent every evening sitting on one or other balcony gazing out at the ocean. The rooms themselves were spacious and comfortable. The atmosphere of the hotel was very old school luxurious, and there’s clearly a lot of history there. Breakfasts were good. It was very clean and looked just like the pictures on Booking. It had everything we needed, plus a balcony with a lovely view of Funchal. During our stay, the apartment was cleaned, new bedsheets and towels were provided. Ana was very kind and easy to reach. She met us when we arrived and gave us maps and tips on places to visit and eat. Communication was great during our stay.
