Great value for money, beautiful, clean and homey. Very helpful and accommodating host. Very romantic. A little bit tricky to find the place. No car access, there is a place to park near the restaurant. Live your luggage in the car and come back later with the host in a tiny car to pick it up.

Eloiza was fantastic... she collected our luggage from the car park outside the old city, in her tiny electric Citroen. She was very helpful booking dinner for us The house is a fantastic multilevel warren of interesting places, clean and well thought out, with lots of interesting pictures and articles Breakfast was excellent

It was an amazing place steeped in history! The walk to the castle is a must as there are beautiful views at every turn. You will find yourself awestruck trying to fathom how it was possible to create a town amongst the boulders. It’s truly an amazing and magical place.

An amazing town with great views. Climbed up to the castle. All the houses built around the boulders were so interesting. Parking is very challenging here. Not great if you have mobility challenges.

Monsanto is a wonderful and unique town perched high amongst enormous boulders with Castle ruins and stunning views across Portugal. There are is an easy walk to the Castle and great coffee/wine shops and an excellent restaurant Monsanto Cafe and Bistro to enjoy.

Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways.

Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways. There was an old castle with an archangel Michael chapel - the House of the Dragon, a TV series, was filmed there. Many of the buildings had a huge boulder as one side of the structure or maybe a roof. We loved the hiking around there as well. And the views were spectacular. You could just feel the history around you.

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and...

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and Spain so far. It is so authentic and real, the buildings are amazing and the views are outstanding. The walk up to the Castle is a little challenging but so worth the effort. We were there for the medieval festival and were made very welcome by the locals and we had some memorable times there. If you are in the Douro Valley, make the effort to head to Monsanto if you want to visit an authentic and historic village.

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk...

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk trip to Portugal. You can start to see the massive boulders from the base of the hillside and then it's 5 km straight up winding narrow road. You will need your host to show you where to park.

Wonderful to stay in Monsanto and really take time to experience the town. Wonderful host that despite speaking little English was very helpful in booking us dinner, making us a beautiful breakfast and transported our bags up and down the hill in her little car. It would NOT be possible to stay in Monsanto without this help it’s just too hilly! Comfy bed, spacious apartment very dark and quiet at night. Easy access to walk to castle first thing in morning. Beautiful views in town

Great location, the farm was lovely and the kids loved it. They had plenty of animals, and a baby pony too! The staff was super helpful and friendly. The pool is absolutely incredible., super big and ideal for kids and families. It has a great barbecue area as well! It's really close to amazing places and ideal to explore different locations such as Penha Garcia, Barragem do Meimao and Monsanto. Would definitely recommend!

Amazing host who ensured we had a wonderful stay. Met us warmly at parking space and took our luggage in her electric car up to the property. Ensured we had all the information we needed to make the most of our visit to Monsanto. When we returned from exploring on a cold winters night turned up with homemade soup and cooked us a substantial breakfast in the morning. Definitely our best stay in Portugal 😊

An unexpected mountain paradise in Portugal. Beautiful medieval environment with modern rooms. Set among a citrus orchard with ancient olive tree groves. Located a 15 min walk up a "Roman Way" path to the stunning medieval mountain village of Monsanto. Clear instructions from Ingrid (the manager) on how to get there were very helpful.
