FAQs about hotels in Chiang Mai

The Rose of the North

Located among Thailand’s highest mountains, Chiang Mai is the beloved, idyllic and somewhat mystic capital of the North. Offering more than 300 temples, it is considered one of the most important cultural centres in the country.

Despite being Thailand's fifth-largest city, Chiang Mai still keeps a relaxed and laidback feel. Modernity, trendy shops and boutique hotels haven’t altered much of its picturesque and peaceful atmosphere.

This reputation is partly due to its proximity to mountains and lush green areas, like Doi Suthep Mountain and its panoramic Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep temple. The Doi Inthanon National Park is 60 km away and comprises Thailand’s highest mountain.

Hotels in Chiang Mai’s old city centre are a popular choice, offering a more picturesque experience, with its moat and older temples. Chiang Mai hotels can also be found around the Chang Klhan Rd, where the famous Night Bazaar takes place.

The city’s nightlife runs along the Loi Kroh Rd, while Ratchadamneon Rd hosts the main Sunday night pedestrian market. Don’t forget to buy an umbrella from Bo Sang and eat a bowl of kao soi.

Whether you arrive at Chiang Mai International Airport or come by land from Bangkok, don’t miss 'The Rose of the North' deals on Booking.com!

I liked Chiang Mai, but it wasn’t quite what I expected.

I liked Chiang Mai, but it wasn’t quite what I expected. I imagined it to be less crowded and more village-like. Chiang Mai mainly consists of the night bazaar, hotels, bars and restaurants, souvenir and handicraft shops, massage salons, and places where you can buy weed. Of course, Chiang Mai also has culture and some nice spots, but for me it’s not a particularly special city. I did, however, visit places outside Chiang Mai that were definitely worth seeing. I could see myself living in Chiang Mai, as it’s a complete city with everything you need as a resident. But for a holiday, I would choose a different destination.

I loved Chiang Mai.

I loved Chiang Mai. It was a slower pace and not too rushed There is plenty to see and do whilst you are there. I liked that where i stayed i could walk about quite easily. There was enough activities to keep me busy and if i wanted to nothing there were lots of open spaces to go and chill. Food was in abundance from street vendors to little cafe's and name brand fast food along with the supermarkets and 7/11 if you wanna cook for yourself. My excursions were a mix of booked via thr app or tour desk and i also took a punt on a few tuk tuk drivers

I heard from other people that the traffic in Chiang Mai was bad, especially for the market. But, since we were within walking distance of most things we were ok. We took a cab to a couple of things, mid day. We also booked an elephant refuge tour, so were on a shuttle bus. The traffic on the way back was pretty busy.

Cold weather + rich culture combined with Thai hospitality and great food. Chiang Mai offers a wide variety of activities but is small enough for the city to be still seen on foot (or Grab). Great variety of temples, museum, coffee and restaurant hopping, bars with happy hour, hikes, elephants, or a daytrip to Chiang Rai.

We enjoyed our time in Chiang Mai, especially Wat Pha Lat, which is a somewhat hidden forest temple that is very tranquil and lovely. It's not on a lot of tours but is near the big temple on Doi Suthep mountain so it is easy to add it. You can hike the mountain but we found it pretty strenuous (but then, we are older). We do NOT recommend taking a "Red taxi tour" which is uncomfortable and has you breathing a lot of fumes. It's cheap though. But tours through other companies are reasonable and more comfortable. Take a Thai cooking class, which is cheap and absolutely wonderful. We also enjoyed a day-tour of Chiang Dao cave and the Hill Tribes.

Chiang Mai is the capital of north Thailand and worth a visit of a couple of weeks. Less hot and humid than Bangkok. Also calmer and friendlier. Avoid in the smoky season (April and May) when the area farmers burn off stuff they don’t like and create horrendous smog for everyone. Once the monsoon starts that goes away. Red trucks are good for getting around but you need to understand how they work. Good veggie restaurant on Monmong north of tapae gate.

Extremely good hotel in an excellent location at a ridiculously low price! We loved everything about this hotel. Located right next to the old city gate and about a 10 minute walk through some great streets to the night market. Do not miss the food court at the market and especially Ha Longs BBQ ribs. The best ribs I’ve eaten outside of Texas, and they even gave them a run for their money! The hotel is calming, tastefully decorated, big rooms, huge bed and lovely staff. Would stay here again when next in Chiang Mai

Very stylish hotel: from the reception and dining area to the hall and room. The room itself was nice, not too big, very clean, interesting bathroom with shower about half a meter lower, comfortable bed. Solid breakfast. Perfect location - 6,7 minutes walk from the entrance to the old city and with a lovely temple just across the street. Nice staff.

Excellent breakfast options, great location near night bazaars. Amazingly comfortable beds and spacious rooms. Hugely helpful & friendly staff. Hotel also had bicycles we could take to tour the temples in the old city. The hotel building is beautiful and exudes old word charm. Our room with its french doors onto the first floor terrace overlooking the street was lovely. The room was thoughtfully decorated in a style matching the building. Being in the old city we could walk to cafes, restaurants, the night markets and all the attractions.
