Housed in a former Alentejo convent, it dates back to the 12th century with 750 hectares. we loved this property. probably the favourite property of our 3 week Portugal trip and definitely the most economical. owners work in the gelato store next door so were easily accessible, always welcoming and friendly. good sized bedrooms, 1 ensuite bathroom, one in the hallway. well equipped and beautiful kitchen. great location. air conditioning worked great. only flight up. beautiful and large rooftop deck.

The hotel and rooms are charming, cozy and sparkling clean, and all the facilities and pools are well taken care of. Staff is exceptional, everyone we met was very helpful, hospitable and friendly, and made us feel very welcome. The food was one of the many highlights for sure, our dinner at the hotel was a delight, and we greatly appreciated the staff coming in earlier the day of our check out so that we could have breakfast before early flight home (and it was freshly baked croissants, what a treat!). All in all, we absolutely loved our stay at A Casa do Governador, and will be happy to come back!

Just 2km from Monsaraz Castle, Monte Alerta is surrounded by a meditation garden, organic orchard and next to the largest artificial lake in Europe, the Alqueva. It features an outdoor pool, hot tub and free Wi-Fi. We liked how welcoming Victoria was. She was an excellent host. Our room (#3) was spacious and very comfortable. We enjoyed the breakfast and the pool. We liked the proximity to Monsaraz and to the OLA stargazing as both were just 5 minutes away. It was a good base for 4 days with day trips to Monsaraz, Evora and Estromoz. We plan on returning for a fall or spring visit.
