Wow if you are looking for a luxury Japanese experience, this is it!! Our stay was exceptional from the get go. The traditional welcome was set in an beautiful historic house set apart from the hotel which was rather a surprise for us as we thought we had been taken to the wrong place. We were given champagne and oyaki cakes while the host explained our stay. Then a short walk (or they can shuttle you) up through the beautiful streets of Asama Onsen. The hotel itself is next level! Beds were so comfortable, snacks and cold drinks available 24/7, and the onsen on the deck was just divine. The bookshop/library is absolutely incredible. The breakfast and dinner is included -Not that we didn't like it as was a great experience and fabulously done on an open fire in restaurant - the food is very traditional so come with open mind and give it a go!! Hotel is situated outside of main central city so you do need to taxi to places which didn't bother us as was so worth it. Highly recommend. Was such a highlight of our trip.

A lovely apartment, close to local transport. The owner was very friendly and helpful. They made us feel very welcome by providing water and snacks on arrival.

Hotel Tamanoyu features spacious public hot spring baths, as well as private ones. For further relaxation, it offers massages, Japanese cuisine and small classical concerts.

We have traveled to Japan many times, but this was our first time staying at a ryokan and it was so much more than we anticipated. Every staff member was so friendly, kind, and spoke English. We booked a corner suite with a private onsen. As others have mentioned, the check-in process is very individualized and leisurely. We were asked to sit down, they brought manju and tea, and a staff member (Reimi) explained everything to us. Reimi also escorted us to the suite and provided more information about it and the onsen. Dinner and breakfast were outstanding with multiple courses at each meal. Even though food is served in their dining hall, each party has it's own partitioned eating area (with shoji doors). Our son didn't feel well toward the end of dinner and missed dessert. We were surprised that our server saved his dessert and presented it to him at breakfast. As we checked out, the manager gifted us with temari ball trinkets. If you are visiting Matsumoto, Nagano I would highly recommend staying over night at Hotel Tamanoyu.

Absolutely loved our stay at Izumiso! We opted for no dinner and the staff gave us a map of their recommendations around the area, all within walking distance. The onsen was beautiful and relaxing

The personnel was really nice, they wanted to help us with everything. We couldn’t get the local bike rental app working, and we asked if there was any possibility’s for renting a bike. When we came back from our room, the two woman that worked at the check in fixed two bikes for us!

The hotel was amazing—so clean and welcoming! There were many thoughtful details that made our experience exceptional. From the public baths and sauna, that had creams and beauty accessories, to the evening treats like ice cream and noodles, everything was delightful. I booked a shared room which was perfect since I was solo traveling and didn't need much space. Staff was very friendly and gave a quick tour of the hostel. I would say I was pretty cautious about not making too much noise being in a shared room and sound proofing is not too great overall since this is an older building but didn't bother me too much. I think it's a perfect little stay for the 2 nights that I was there. There's also a kitchen that would have been great if I needed to cook but I didn't end up using it. They have a spacious area to just sit and relax outside of the rooms as well. Overall, definitely enjoyed my stay and will book here again if I come back to Matsumoto!
