We booked the twin room with private external bathroom (i.e an outdoor relaxation area with a hot tub fed from the hot spring water). When you walk into the room you feel instantly relaxed. Supreme luxury and comfort. Our breakfast and dinner were included, and it was absolute fine dining, some of the best food we have ever eaten (served up in our own private dining room!) The service was second to none, we felt absolutely spoiled every minute of our stay. An unforgettable experience.

Staff at dinner, breakfast and at the roof top were an absolute dream of kindness and professionalism. During the private dinner the chef came to prepare the sushi by our table which was incredible. The food was absolutely exquisite using local produce and prepared and presented with such a delicacy as I've never seen before! What a treat! Early July, we were the only travellers so we had the onsen to ourselves. There was male, female and private onsen available. There was excellent service, and they welcomed our young toddlers. We got driven to the Jigokudani Monkey Park and picked up by Yumoto-san. Yumoto-san and his wife also helped style our family in yukata for photos.
Yumoto-san has a very welcoming and lovely ryokan and we stayed in a traditional family room with shoji and tatami mats. We loved the ambiance, the view, and the onsen facilities. We also got a free lift to the snow monkey park. Great for families in a place full of character even if everything is a little dated.
Not much to be honest. When we arrived, we were told we could only have one person in each family room, even though we booked 6 rooms for 7 people, very strange! The beds were uncomfortable, and the pillow was basically a sandbag! The location was great for the Snow Monkeys, and they offer a free shuttle service, but there was no pick up. We ordered dinner and were told we had to eat somewhere else because some Karate Kid wannabe was hosting some tragic show.
It’s VERY quiet if you like quiet. It’s a ski-in-ski-out, great for family with kids, or a big group of friends. But keep in mind there is no village. You have to eat dinner at the hotel, unless you have a car. But the owner was super lovely! Would stay there again just because of the owner!
The staff were so helpful and lovely to chat to. The stand up bar was fun, as well as the hotel onsen. Recommend this for families
The staff at Villa Alpen are exceptional and go out of their way to accommodate your every need. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the family that owns the hotel and can understand why families return every year.
Loved everything about this family owned older style traditional hotel. The owners were lovely, driving us to the monkeys, and giving us a great overview of the area and where to sightsee and eat. Lovely reasonably priced breakfast on a funky basement room filled with rock and roll memorabilia. An greay onsen onsite.
the onsen looking out into the snow was a great experience. great location for skiing, snowboarding and fun in the snow. pricing good value for a family.
