Set in a Gothic monastery, Kruisherenhotel Maastricht - Oostwegel Collection, member of Design Hotels has free WiFi. It has a mezzanine level restaurant in the central church hall. This was a faultless place to stay and the overall design of the conversion of the former church buildings just adds a special topping. The public spaces are chic and have tasteful art installed, some of which is for sale. The dining area is unique, in my opinion, and worth a visit for a meal even if not staying. Our room was well apportioned, spotless and lacked for nothing. The staff were very attentive and even spotted it was my birthday so gave me cakes as I checked out.

Located in Valkenburg and with Vrijthof reachable within 12 km, Château St Gerlach - Oostwegel Collection, member of Relais and Châteaux provides a tour desk, allergy-free rooms, a terrace, free WiFi... The property is gorgeous, with every nook and cranny oozing with history and character. Driving in was easy, check-in was helpful, showed us all interesting spots to visit on a map and asked to help with our luggage. We took a late lunch at the bistro close to the grounds entry, which was delicious. This is where we tried the house wine for the first time and were pleasantly surprised. We chose the rose garden and the orchard as a place to unwind before dinner. Dinner was sublime and the staff really took the dietary needs of my pregnant wife seriously. Almost every dish was extra tailored specifically for her. Room was lovely and had a very nice welcome gift for my wife’s birthday. Breakfast was one of the best I’ve had with very nice choices a la carte and buffet. After checkout we borrowed an umbrella for the sun and went around on a hike that was guided via an app, all was very easy to install and follow. Coming back we also went into the church and learned about the life of St. Gerlac and his journey from a bandit to a saint, not often you hear about such redemption arcs. Back at the hotel the staff went the extra mile to open the bar ahead of schedule to serve us drinks before we set off home.
