A traditional ryokan in Hakone or in Kurashiki is possibly struggling to maintain the property and offer modern ammenities and updated food and will charge more than here for less comfort and beauty. Toutou ‘s renovation gives everything a traditional ryokan might have, in a modern comfortable way . (No dinner but great fruit / breads/ tea and facilities to bring in food provided) I would come here everytime I was in Japan . …. And I usually don’t pay more than about $75 US / $100 to $120 NZ per night per person when travelling. Stay two nights if you can. It really does deliver at this price point.

The staff were amazing in upgrading us to a better room and looking after our luggage when we arrived a few hours early. Would definitely stay here again.

I picked Kido as it was a little off the beaten track, in Ushimado, outside Setouchi. It's tucked away in a quiet little neighbourhood and this is definitely part of its appeal, and the stay there was very peaceful. I was welcomed on arrival and shown around the facilities, and then to my room, which was very comfortable and spacious, and had a great view across the tops of the houses to the coast. I arrived by car; there's a small car park nearby which wasn't hard to find, thanks to directions sent before I arrived. There are a handful of restaurants in the area, and it's a great location for taking a relaxed evening stroll.

Very spacious, stylish, clean, and comfortable! It was a great place to stay with friends. There was a game room with a lot of board games for us to enjoy as well. Would definitely stay here again!
