The Hotel&Hostel Montarina occupies a historic Villa built around 1860, only 200 metres from the Lugano train station. The hostel exceeded all our expectations. Firstly, it is a great location near the city centre. You can walk into the city on foot. Secondly, it has a cool swimming pool, lots of sun loungers and umbrellas, you can have a good rest after the road. I also liked that the room, although compact, was very comfortable and had air conditioning. Toilets and showers on the floor, plumbing in excellent condition. The staff is very friendly. There are many refrigerators in the dining room, the kitchen has everything you need to cook. We will definitely come back here again!

Surrounded by a lush garden, the Youth Hostel Locarno is 1.5 km away from the train station and the Lake Maggiore. i had to check in late due to a late night train, but the staffs were super helpful in ensuring that i manage to check in by myself. got a shared dorm all by myself and i thought the staffs were very considerate because i was pretty worried that i would wake the roommate during late night if i had one.

The rooms are newly renovated (Aug 2025) with an excellent bed and shower/bathroom. Loved my stay. Highlight was having supper in the villages Restaurant Osteria Salzi (village square). Would recommend both to anyone hiking through on the Strada Alta and the Trans Swiss Route (Nr 2).
