Despite being a "self service" hostel it doesn't feel impersonal and empty. The staff leaves messages, channels for feedback, makes small gestures for a friendly atmosphere and showing they will be available if you need help. The quality of the beds, toilets, cleanliness etc is a level above the vast majority of hostels. I am usually not a huge fan of "self service hostels" but this one is different. It's also very close to the bus station and not so far from the airport, so very useful if you are just transiting through Tallinn.

MJK Hostel offers accommodation in Nõmme, within a 30-minute walk of Lake Ülemiste and a 15-minute drive of Tallinn's Old Town. Free WiFi is featured and free private parking is available on site. Very cheap place, clean, comfortable and friendly staff. Check out at 12pm which is very nice. Very good value for money.

Located in Tallinn’s centre, 400 metres from Raekoja Plats, and close to many restaurants and bars, this 16eur - Fat Margaret's features free Wi-Fi, a shared kitchen and a 24-hour reception. One of the best hostels I’ve been to in a long time. The buildibg is clean, rooms are very comfortable and the common kitchen with dining tables is a must visit. I felt at home and would return again.

Viru Backpackers Hostel is a small, friendly place on the bustling main street of Tallinn's old town, just around the corner from the Town Hall. It’s right in old town, can’t get a better location. The bed was so comfy (nice mattress topper) that I booked an additional night. The bathrooms are kept very clean. While there was no en suite, there were enough bathrooms that it didn’t matter
