Situated in Matsumoto and with Matsumoto Station reachable within 1 km, Couch Potato Hostel features free bikes, non-smoking rooms, free WiFi throughout the property and a shared lounge. The property is around 3.9 km from The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, 29 km from Canora Hall and 600 metres from Matsumoto Castle. The accommodation offers a shared kitchen, and luggage storage for guests. My stay at this hostel was wonderful. It’s beautiful and cozy, combining traditional Japanese decor with modern functionality. The staff genuinely care about making guests feel comfortable and ensuring they have everything they need. For me, the shared space is important, and it was very nice here – though perhaps a few more board games would be a great addition. The dormitory room was fantastic, with big, soft mattresses. I definitely recommend it!

Guest rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a fridge, a microwave, a kettle, a bidet, a hairdryer and a desk. The rooms at the hostel are fitted with a shared bathroom and bed linen. My party of 5 total stayed only one night when hiking the Magome to Nagiso section of the Nakasendo. Proximity to train station and Nakasendo trail was the original selling point, but we fell in love with the place as soon as our host toured us around. It feels like staying at an artsy bed and breakfast, except you provide the breakfast and you get the entire place to yourself. There's small, delightful touches of personality and hospitality every where you look. We did not want for anything. Our sweet host met us at the front door to enter data from our passports and then gave us a walk through of the building. Two toilets and two showers was perfect for a group of 5. Fridge and other kitchen appliances work great. We listened to the CD disc player on the wall while reading the books and it was a lovely experience. The futons were placed very thoughtfully according to our parties needs. In addition to the trail and train station, there's a grocery store, a historic bridge and a cafe all within a couple minutes walk. The patios were a great hang out spot and we saw monkeys near the river around 7am. Honestly, I wish we had stayed longer but our plans dictated we move on. Next time we will try to book a few more nights so we can explore the area more!

Matsumoto Airport is 67 km from the property. great location, reasonable walking distance to most things you need. great, clean rooms and shared facilities. brekky exactly what you need before heading out to the slopes. staff were welcoming, friendly and super helpful. went out of their way to shuttle us to pick up hire gear (twice), even to dinner once and out to the mountains every morning. their recommendations for restaurants, mountains, hire gear and everything in between were spot on.

Situated in Nagiso, 8.4 km from Kotoku-ji Temple, Hostel Yui-an features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and a terrace. With free WiFi, this 1-star hostel has a restaurant and a bar. The accommodation offers a shared kitchen, free shuttle service and luggage storage for guests. I highly recommend this lovely hotel! We were planning to walk between Tsumago and Magome, so I originally wanted to stay in one of the two towns. Places book up fast, and the local tourism office recommended Hostel Yui-an. I am so glad they did! It’s perfectly convenient to the trail, because you come into Nagiso station and the hostel staff will pick you up. Then, they can drop you off the next day for a short bus ride to Tsumago or Magome. The building is incredible - a 200+ year-old farmhouse that has been loving redone to be a warm and cosy mountain retreat. Great views, very friendly English-speaking staff (thank you Yuki-san for the wonderful local food recommendations!), and great food. The hostel served dinner and breakfast for an additional fee, and the food was delicious. We even had a hot chocolate after dinner that blew us away. Homemade plum wine, local sake tasting - this place has it all. It books up early, so plan ahead!

1166 Backpackers is located in Nagano, within less than 1 km of Zenkoji Temple and 2.5 km of Nagano Station. With a shared lounge, the 1-star hostel has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi. The accommodation provides a shared kitchen, and luggage storage for guests. I don’t know any other hostel in Nagano, but I also don’t need to. This is by far one of the best hostels I have stayed in. The location is good, Sakura (I believe it is her name) is a great host and even though she is not fully fluent in English, she communicates very effectively and tries her best to improve. The lobby is cozy and the comodities are great. Shame I only stayed one night
