Barnyard Backpackers Te Anau offers accommodation on spacious grounds with spectacular mountain views. Free WiFi and private on site parking is available. I’ve never slept so well in a hostel before. The pillows, mattresses and beds are so comfortable (no bunk beds but five sturdy wooden single beds so nothing squeaks or moves). Every dorm is a hut with a bathroom and from there you walk a hundred meters up to the main building: a barn with a kitchen and a cozy common area. The kitchen is well equipped and gets properly cleaned daily. The best part: it’s surrounded by deer farms and in March and April you can hear the deer and elks roar all day and night long. It’s pretty special. I absolutely loved it. At night you can see the stars as the next town is a ten minute drive away. It’s situated between Te Anau and Lake Manapouri. A beautiful area and an area where they filmed a couple of Lord of the rings scenes. In the morning and the evening you could see the fog when the sun rose and set over the hills. Yes, like someone wrote, it’s like Heidi. It’s close to beautiful lakes, mountains, rivers… I think it’s one of my most favourite places in New Zealand. I stayed for five nights and only left because I still wanted to see other places in Nee Zealand before my holiday was over. I could have stayed so much longer. I absolutely fell in love with this place and had a great time with the people there. Thank you so much!

Set in park-like grounds on the shores of Lake Te Anau, 5 minutes' walk from the town centre, Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers has both mountain and lake views from the majority of the rooms. The location and facilities are great. Thebstaff is really friendly and always keen to help. We had an incident in the night and the staff took it very seriously and helped us out.

The hostel had a really cosy vibe, with a big lounge area and big kitchen. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The dorm rooms had lockers and it was possible to have electronics charging inside them. The bathrooms were clean. Location was amazing, very close to the lake front and only a short walk from the supermarket.
