Haka House Bay of Islands is a welcoming and stylish hostel located just across from the scenic Paihia wharf, offering cosy, practical accommodations with million-dollar views of the stunning surroundings. Appreciated the friendly service provided by the staff. Traveling solo, unfamiliar to the area and only a few days to explore, the gentleman at reception had some good recommendations for a bush walk, dinner spot and some exploring on the ferry. The lodge also offers a shared kitchen, dining room and indoor outdoor dining with BBQ facilities in the garden patio area. Amazing people, very welcoming staff. Clean and tidy. Wonderful communal areas. One step to the beach! I highly recommend it!!

Centabay was my favourite hostel that I stayed at in New Zealand!!! I loved the vibrant atmosphere, the lovely backpacker-staff and the wonderful manager who was always a joy to chat with. The prices are incredibly reasonable for a place in the middle of Paihia, and you can tell the manager isn't in it for the profit - she genuinely wants to help travellers have the best experience possible. The hot tub worked well and was always great to use. The hammocks and tropical garden are another bonus. I could go on and on!

The Cell Block Backpackers hostel is a refurbished 1960's jailhouse, converted in to colourful accommodation. The property is in a central location, around 400 metres from Town Basin Marina, the main intercity bus stop and Whangarei Art Museum. It is 500 metres from Claphams Clock Museum. Loved that it was unique! Loved the people and the owners, super friendly and everything was easy and accessible, they also had cats so it was nice cuddling up with them especially with me being away from home and missing my own.
