## The neighborhood The 1st arrondissement of Lyon is rich in historical and architectural significance. This area houses the city’s administration, with the City Hall (Hôtel de Ville), and is also a hub for culture with the Lyon Opera. The recent history of the Lyon Opera includes the creation of the Orchestra of the Opera in 1983, which has rapidly become known for its young instrumentalists and experienced section leaders. Prestigious names such as John Eliot Gardiner, the first music director, Kent Nagano, Louis Langrée, and Iván Fischer have all left their mark on the ensemble. Place des Terreaux, at the heart of this district, is home to the City Hall, a grand rectangular building designed by Simon Maupin in the 17th century. Its architecture was later modified by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the architect of Versailles. The square also features the Bartholdi Fountain, created by the designer of the Statue of Liberty, as well as the Palais Saint-Pierre, which houses the Museum of Fine Arts since 1862. The area is full of shopping streets like Rue de la République and Rue Edouard Herriot, and is near the Cultural Hill of Croix-Rousse, known for its silk weaving history.
